Improve update frequency

Improve update frequency

At the moment the project is till in alpha phase and I published the project unplanned ... at it was further advertised without my knowledge. I want to stick to a weekly update, although the update takes a long time and slows the rendering down. So maybe it will be bi-weekly until I can find a solution. -- Skunk 14:52, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Please show the update date on the side --Lefty1963 07:53, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
As you might have seen I already prepared to do so in the Status box, here in the Wiki. The data import and prepreocessing of Saturday finished after ~72 hours today in the morning. -- Skunk 09:28, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

highway as area

It would be great if other areas tagged as highway=* were rendered like highway=pedestrian. This is the first style I see where this is done in an accurate and beautiful way.

Actually I wanted to stick to the Map Features and some additional features I'm planning to make a Proposal for (e.g. tracks=single|double for Tramways and Railroads). Apparently highway=*;area=yes is not an official feature. (Btw, I will write a Page about the OSB's interpretations of tags). Does somebody know about a discussion where it was decided about this? Because I could think about reasons for not supporting it, e.g. Routing? -- Skunk 14:52, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Highway=residential without name tag rendering

I like your brouwser, because it is simple to use for orinary, none map making people. My problem is with the rendering in small greek villages. A lot of the roads don't have streetnames. Besides that, they are usauly verry small (2.5 meter). To get a better view it would be nice if you render residential highyway without a name tag as half the size as a normal residential highway. ~~~~ --Pims 02:22, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll be happy to improve the rendering for these small streets, I was thinking about this myself. On the other hand I think the missing name-tag is a bad indicator. Maybe it could be "width=narrow" or "width=2.5m" ? -- Skunk 17:40, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

relations

It would be great if there will be a box, where i can put a Relation-ID inside an then see this Relation on the card.

If I understand correctly you mean, you want to enter the relation ID to the search input field? Yeah, why not, it's good idea. I will include the idea to one of the next updates. For now you can use '#rel_12345' as hash for the url. -- Skunk 14:09, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Webpage Interface Improvements

  • It would be great if the left panel could be toggled to made invisible. This would add the option of solely showing the map (like in informationfreeway.org). -- SB79 09:32, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Search

  • Subdivide the results in categories such as those already used in the browser.(Leisure, Sport and Tourism; Shopping; Education and Culture; Services; Transportation; Places)
  • Put Places as first result and if there are more than one, order them from largest to smallest.

--Alessioz 10:40, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

improved stop grouping

See for example here.

I would like it when OpenStreetBrowser would group regional stops (S-Bahn i.e.) named "Town-Stopname" and urban/local stops named "Stopname S", which are actually belonging together. --E-Malte 20:11, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Photographs

Would it be possible for OSB to show photographs from another service (flickr?) using the geocoding information on the photos to position them? As an example, this would enable me to type the name of a flickr user or a flickr tag and those photos would then be positioned on the map. This would be an "open" version of what Google Maps offers with Panoramio photos. It would also be very handy as a form of online photo mapping. OliverLondon 13:29, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Edit link

Could you include an "Edit in openstreemap" link? OliverLondon 13:29, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Done (at least for nodes and ways which are not polygons - other will be added soon) -- Skunk 04:18, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Sorry but I can't see this. I'm using Firefox. What should I do / where should I look? OliverLondon 16:49, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
It's under "OSM Internals". Can you tell me the ID of the object you tried to edit? (as I said, it's only available for ways and nodes right now, not for relations and the so-called 'collections', which are automatic relations) -- Skunk 16:33, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
OK thanks, I found it. FWIW I think it's buried far too deep. You have to select a way, then enable OSM internals, then find the edit link. I think an Edit link could belong on screen permanently, either on the map (next to contributors or next to Permalink) or bottom left, next to Map Key / About. OliverLondon 12:22, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Find and highlight POIs

I'd like to be able to search the current bounding box for particular items (for example sport=rowing) and see them highlighted on the map. There is lots of information "buried" in OSM which is hard to surface - this would be a valuable feature for a browser site. OliverLondon 12:27, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Rendering island names, ferry routes and airport names

OSM browser doesn't render island names? Ferry routes aren't displayed and there are no airpoert names.. Please fix this... --Mvrban 06:50, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Localization of tags

On this node i added a germanized "shop" key: shop:de=Drogerie.

I dont't know if this is good practice because i found this kind of localization (:de) described in wiki only for the "name" key. But if it is, perhaps there is a way in OpenStreetBrowser to show these tags in the users preferred language too? Toni54 22:25, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

It's not good practice to add a "shop:de"-tag. All the tags (like amenity, shop, ...) can be translated using the OpenStreetBrowser translation system, which you can find under "Options" -> "Improve translation". Then search for "tag:shop" in the first column. The changes will not be available right away, because they need to be imported by hand (which I promise to do regularily). -- Skunk 08:55, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, did that, and worked perfect (think you have good reasons changing it to plural). But i don't understand why it wouldn't be better to collect these translations "upstream", i.e. in Openstreetmap instead of Openstreetbrowser. Collected in Openstreetmap everyone can use the translations, whereas in the latter case only Openstreetbrowser benefits from it. --Toni54 21:54, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you are right, it would be better to collect them in OpenStreetMap itself. Which is not done right now (at least as far as I know, if they do please give me pointers). As soon as they do, I'll be happy to let them "flow upstream", but until then it's easier for me to collect them in OpenStreetBrowser. I'll consider starting a discussion on the OSM-dev-mailinglist. Btw, I've noticed that you submitted a translation for shop=chemist, it will be included in the next minor update. You could also provide a gender and a plural form (if we collect them we should do it right, shouldn't we?) like "F;Drogerie;Drogerien" -- Skunk 07:07, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

(Sometimes?) value without key is enough

Example: In OpenStreetBrowser this node shows the whole tag shop=chemist. For the purpose of "don't show unneeded information": Wouldn't it be enough just to show the value ("chemist")? Toni54 22:33, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

I'll give it a thought, but I'm not sure yet if this is such a good idea. -- Skunk 08:58, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

shop=trade and shop=supplement

Hello -- I recently added a series of shops which are included in this OSB view => http://www.openstreetbrowser.org/#?zoom=18&lat=39.68297&lon=-75.73412&layers=&basemap=osb&categories=leisure%5Bleisure_shop%2Cleisure_sport%5D&overlays= . One of the three appears in the OSB map: "Mark IV Hair Designs", which as shop=hairdresser. The other two are a GNC outlet with shop=supplement and a beauty supplies shop with shop=trade. My feeling is that "shop = supplement" would not provide much return on investment in adding to the rendering rules; however, I would say that "shop = trade" would, as these tend to be few in number, difficult to find, and cater to specialty needs. Regards --Ceyockey 18:59, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Barrier=fence rendering

  • Would it be possible to change the rendering of barrier=fence at zoom levels 14 and 15 just to a single line? At these levels e.g. garden fences are much more visible than buildings and that doesn't look very nice: Example
  • And at higher zooms to change the fence colour to e.g.dark shade of grey? Because the current colour blends with highway=track: Example

Mar4s 17:57, 14 August 2011 (BST)

Yes, you are right. I will work on these things for the next update. -- Skunk 23:06, 14 August 2011 (BST)
Thanks, it looks much better now. And just one thing, czech flag in language selection is wrong, it should look like this -- Mar4s 12:51, 12 September 2011 (BST)
My feeling is that the rendering of fences is not on the critical path for OSB, as I interpreted the navigational aspects which this rendering would support to be quite secondary to the comprehensive presentation of "what is this place used for" information. Just sharing my opinion, not criticizing the suggestion or OSB. --Ceyockey 18:45, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Instructions

I was going to suggest that someone wrote some clearer (more complete) instructions for using OpenStreetBrowser. Then I decided I'd like to have a try myself. Version 1 is here: OpenStreetBrowser/Instructions. How did I do? Are they good enough to put a link to them from this page? Rostranimin 15:52, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Wow, thanks a lot for your contribution. I just made some corrections/improvements, especially in the parts where you posted questions. I hope I could clear up some things :) Currently I'm wondering where I should post the link to the Instructions - do you have an idea? Do you want to add it yourself? -- Skunk 18:33, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the nice comments. I haven't had time to check all your edits yet, but look forward to doing this. My suggestion would be to put an obvious link to the instructions immediately before or after the contents box on this page OpenStreetBrowser. I want to know other people agree this is a good idea before doing that. My reason for suggesting this place is because I think that OpenStreetBrowser should be made easy to use for ordinary people - not just developers and mappers. I think that the documentation currently is written mostly for developers. This is expected while the Browser is being developed - but as more people use it the documentation needs to become more easy for normal map users. This problem I think is also a problem for OpenStreetMap - when looking for documentation a new user is first told how to make a map and why it's fun to do this... when a new user should first be told how to use the map. Rostranimin 22:32, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I've made some further very minor improvements (I hope improvements) to a couple of your changes - trying to improve the language and clarity even more. I still do not understand the 'keep view' function in the map view toolbox - so I think a further explanation is necessary and NOTE that I have discovered a MAJOR bug with this function - reported in full as Bug6 on the OpenStreetBrowser/Bugs page Rostranimin 23:58, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I just saw your bug report, will check it soon. The idea why we have the "keep map view" is, that you can remember this choice and then the "start location toolbox" will not appear automatically again. -- Skunk 07:39, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Bug fixed. Any comments on link to instructions? Rostranimin 10:47, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

I added a link to the instructions on the main information page for OpenStreetBrowser. Happy if others feel there's a better place to put the link. Rostranimin 23:01, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Great :) -- Skunk 05:11, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Category list

Building on the instructions I wanted to write a list of categories for end users. There's a new page now with this on OpenStreetBrowser/Category_list. This will only work if editors keep it up to date with important changes - but I thought that it was important enough to try. I hope people may also use this list to introduce any more unusual categories they are working on - or to ask for help at initial stages. I've put a note to ask that detailed conversations take place on a category's talk page. Rostranimin 11:20, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

BUGS

  • Stops without name are not in the list

Browser Support

In Konqueror, the page keeps reloading itself permanently. ---Candid Dauth 16:53, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for giving me a hint. Apparently there are several problems with Konqueror. I'll check it. -- Skunk 07:18, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

More bugs

  • waterway:stream and waterway:river are getting listed in the street directory. I guess outside of Venice this is rather unexpected :-) Thomas June 16th 2009
  • At zoom level 13 buildings which are close to the street are rendered above these streets. --Derstefan 02:38, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Sensivity for the clicking thing on the map is much too high at low zoom levels. If you can see Europe and the big cities for example and you just want to click on London, you won't probably get the city, but rather a bus station somewhere in London or something like that. --Derstefan 03:01, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I know that's a BIG todo on my todo list. Problem is, that the code for clicking doesn't know which things are rendered on the map (resp. which are important enough to be clicked on). Be assured I'm gonna find a solution for this, it also annoys me. But for now we have to live with it. -- Skunk 11:21, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
  • When trying to show E-road relations in traffic overlay, I'm getting "not found" or "response not valid" errors. For example here: http://www.openstreetbrowser.org/#?zoom=11&lat=49.59724&lon=18.11638&layers=&basemap=osb&categories=transport[transport_car[transport_car_routes]]&overlays= for E442 and E462 -- Mar4s 18:56, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
    • I'm working on that bug, should be fixed later this day. Reason were, that there were duplicates in the database. -- Skunk 08:15, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

More Bugs

  • Hide transparent layers after clicking 'back to overview' ;) -- Skunk 16:45, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Window fuer Debug-Meldungen -- Skunk 16:45, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Power lines which contain multiple voltage levels (e.g. voltage=380000;220000) are not displayed at all.
Yeah, that's right. OSB can't work with those multiple values yet. But they will be supported in the near future, some code for this is already finished, but it still needs to be tested and integrated. -- Skunk 18:47, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Feature request: at highest zoom levels, show power=minor_line
They were (and still are until next update) not displayed in the list, that's right. But they should get rendered from zoom level 17. Can you show me an example of a minor_line which is not rendered? -- Skunk 18:47, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

QUESTIONS

License

Hello! A simple question: On which base has this fantastic OpenStreetBrowser software been licensed? I could not find any information about this... --Gypakk 13:46, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Seems to be a secret...? ;-) --Gypakk 16:40, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

You are rights, it's not stated anywhere. I just decided it's the GNU AGPL 3.0 (GNU Affero General Public License). I'm gonna include licensing information to the source. -- Skunk 11:21, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
That's great! Thanks a lot! --Gypakk 09:59, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Is it a way to help translating ?

Is it a way to help translating the interface ? --FrViPofm 14:32, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello! Yes, it would really be great to have a French translation! Very kind of you to ask. The user interface is one of my tasks - it will change a bit in a few weeks or so. I write a mail to you! --Derstefan 21:26, 18 August 2010 (BST)
I have added a french translation. --PierZen 00:26, 24 nov 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much! --Derstefan 16:53, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Tile generation - image unavailability at high zoom

I'm curious about whether the OSB and OSB (light) tiles are not created for display with a similar frequency to the Mapnik tiles. The reason I ask is that for the permalinks below, Mapnik renders, but OSB and OSB (light) do not.

Thanks for your input ... and this looks nice. I've been using OSM for a while now and did not know about this. --Ceyockey 17:56, 6 August 2011 (BST)

Thing is, that OpenStreetBrowser just starts rendering tiles, as soon as the tiles are being requested (same for Mapnik tiles, but the servers have better performance). If nobody has ever visited the area before the tiles have not been rendered. Rendering tiles still takes a couple of seconds and usually the rendering queues are busy ... just be patient and check back later. If a tile has been rendered it will be kept at least a month (updates to that area will not appear on the tiles earlier than that) and will be rerenderd after being re-visited. Btw, OSB (light) are the same tiles but they are displayed with 50% transparency. -- Skunk 19:20, 6 August 2011 (BST)
Thanks. I went back to the OSB link above and it was rendered. Quite nice to be able to query the map by categories for the presented view. Very useful. --Ceyockey 22:14, 6 August 2011 (BST)

Are Shared taxi routes rendered

I added some shared taxi routes for Malang, Indonesia ( http://www.openstreetbrowser.org/whats_here=112.63446239634602,-7.965297937915937 ) few days ago using route=share_taxi tag.Is there any chance I would see them with OSB anytime soon ? thanks Serpicozaure 01:59, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

This page

Can I suggest a more friendly list of features for this page? --

Oh, there are so many things to improve. The feature list. Documentation. Database Performance. Additional Plugins. Yeah. An improved feature list would definitely be a good idea. Also the list on OpenStreetBrowser/Features needs improvement. I updated the list with my suggestions, I hope that's okay. Please further improve it (and you are the native English speaker). -- Skunk 06:41, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Transferred draft list to the page, deleted the version here. Rostranimin 10:03, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
