Drawing the line differently
I don't understand the rational.
"The wiki is currently not clear on the difference between art museums, art galleries, and art shops" . As somebody who spent some making sure it was clear, I disagree. Or at least I find the current tag descriptions clearer than the proposed descriptions.
"This might be partly caused by mappers that are simply not aware of the tourism=gallery tagging scheme" Yes, and obviously it takes while for things to change over, particularly when we've had an untidy situation during the early years. We had tourism=museum documented since forever, while the art_gallery tag was approved much more recently (relatively speaking). It takes time for that sort of change to bed in, and for long-standing tagging practices to adjust to the availability of the newer better tag.
"but perhaps there is also a more fundamental problem. The line between a gallery and a museum is not always easy to draw". No not always easy to draw I agree. The tags docs do currently draw a line, and the line is pretty simple, if a little bit open to interpretation (no more so that the distinction between shop=convenience and a shop=greengrocer for example. Yes we do have fuzzy lines, and we do try to account for these in our tag descriptions) So ...why then, does this proposal just draw the line differently and in a more complicated way. I don't understand the rationale

Clear differences
The current definition which places two distinctively different things, namely art museums and private galleries into the same tag is a problem. It stems from the British English use of the word Gallery. The proposed new boundaries between the museum and gallery make the distinction clear and easier to draw. I disagree that the line is difficult to draw between a museum and a gallery. It also reflects a more international understanding of the word gallery.

Re-purposing or differentiating?
It is worthwhile to discuss if the tourism=gallery should be depreciated and a new tag amenity=contemporary_art_gallery introduced instead so that confusions between the old and the new definition is reduced and it can be identified which one is meant.
