Is there any countries where different grades of prison are named very differnetly? For most places I imagin if this needs to be tagged it can be an addional tag, rather than there being a range of abutters for the differnt grades of prison.

Also if there is a vote, could it be stuck on teh proposed features page when it starts and ends? Ben. 18:24 18th Decemeber 2006 (UTC)

What about the area arround the prison building, that can be pretty big. landuse=prison perhaps ? --Onion 07:14, 8 June 2007 (BST)

Disused prisons?

How should one tag prisons that are now just tourist attractions or museums? Samwilson 03:53, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Have just spotted an old jail (disused for many years) that has been tagged as historic=fort, which is obviously wrong! What's the best option? historic=building + tourism=attraction + name=Old Bannockburn Jail? --Fizzie41 (talk) 02:41, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
tourism=museum / tourism=attraction is definitely taggable
name=* is definitely taggable
historic=building is definitely fitting for historic buildings, though not always will be fitting (sometimes building is ruined, someone it is memorial with recent buildings)
disused:amenity=prison / abandoned:amenity=prison / historic=prison seems fitting if there are some remains

Area?

I think it should be possible to tag an area with the prison tag. Outline the fence or something.--Bengibollen 18:31, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

This is indeed essential, as prison grounds are usually off-limits for the general public. Should this be landuse=? or something --Pfr 12:53, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

I am trying to trace a "correctional village", that is a large prison ground with several prisons of various levels of security as well as a more open village inside. I am now putting the tag landuse=prison on the ground, and amenity=prison on the various parts inside. --Skippern (talk) 14:17, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Landuse=prison far more logical

Why not building=prison? Rickyrab (talk) 20:13, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Still seems strange to refer to prisons as an "amenity".

So the amenity would be for the general public and not the criminals? Rickyrab (talk) 20:13, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Buildings

Mention how to deal with the buildings inside the prison grounds. Jidanni (talk) 02:09, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Wall, fence

Mention how to deal with the outer prison wall / fence. Jidanni (talk) 02:10, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Office etc.

Mention how to tag the prison office, etc. Jidanni (talk) 02:10, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Nice try mate, but you’d have better luck tattooing the plans on your back. Joke aside take a look at Indoor mapping.--Lejun (talk) 16:45, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Juvenile prisons

How should we tag prisons for juveniles? (aka juvy, youth detention center, etc.) Pwhite119 (talk) 23:46, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Same question here. prison:for=juvenile perhaps? Invidious (talk) 04:21, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
