Why do you only want to apply it to nodes? More and more buildings are added as areas to the map, so I think the tag, if uses should be used for areas too. --Ckruetze 23:24, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

That was a Copy/Paste error, further down you can see that closed ways (aka areas) are also meant. Sorry for the omission. Ipofanes 12:21, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Define silo

Will this also cover water tanks and the like? It can be very hard to tell the difference. Maybe it doesn't matter if there is both silo and tank, and occasional overlap. Stevage 09:31, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

In many cases the difference is not that hard to tell, for physical reasons. Pressure on the bottom section of the walls follows a linear increase with height, whereas for solids it follows a logarithmic curve. Therefore, silos can be built much higher with the same materials. A structure such as the one shown in the article could never contain water without being fortified to insane proportions. See also man_made for tanks and Proposed features/gasometer. ==Ipofanes 10:22, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
There is a more general proposal at man_made=storage_tank, encompassing many kinds of storage structures regardless if the content is gas, fluid or solid. An even more general tagging would be to use man_made=tower /Johan Jönsson 22:56, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

building=silo

Why not use "building=silo"? --Kslotte 09:01, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Analogous to existing man_made=gasometer. --Ipofanes 10:45, 16 September 2010 (BST)

"Fahrsilo"

I find "silo" a good proposal. I would not restrict it to tower silo (what is not really done; but picture, wordings, examples, secondary tagging ... dont' give any other ideas) - for that kind of silo one could perhaps use man_made=storage_tank. But since about 10 or 20 years in southern Germany I find more and more "Fahrsilos", great rectangular silos made of concrete where you can drive in. Translations into english I found several like "clamp silo - horizontal silo - bunker silo - horizontal bunker silo". The translation "drive-in silo" would explain the german wording and meaning (i.e. it is not a movable silo but a silo where you can drive in with a traktor in order to compress the material after harvesting and to gather it again in winter as food for the animals) but does not seem to be really used. In the secondary tagging one could distinguish between tower_silo and whatever we would use for "Fahrsilo" (maybe some farmers could give advice).

Now there is an approved tag for "Fahrsilos": man_made=bunker_silo. --LordOfMaps (talk) 20:34, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Status: Abandoned (inactive)

Who knows the reason for that status (Abandoned (inactive))? At the moment this is the best I found to tag "Fahrsilos" (see above). --Rennhenn 08:52, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

In Potlatch2 you can even find Silo/tank in the side bar as POI (is tagged with "man_made=silo"). I was not aware of that as I normally open Potlatch2 coming from the "Reit- und Wanderkarte" [1] with partly different POIs in the side bar. But as I came from "the map" [2] in this WIKI I found this. So I am even more astonished that this tag is abandoned. --Rennhenn 10:30, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
I have removed the abandoned tag and the redirect to the proposed page, as this tag is in wide use. --Neuhausr 16:57, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
