Difference between kindergarten and nursery
In Germany, we have had kindergartens for the 3 to 6 year old for quite a while. (I myself have been to two of them in the early sixties, they were ok.)
Nowadays, we also have nurseries (or crèches?) for the even younger. They are quite different in organisation and, of course, in the age group: they take in the pre-kindergarten lot from parents who have to work. I have tagged one of them with amenity=nursery to differentiate. Any objections?

Why a preschool is not a kindergarten
Again, I feel like I'm fighting against some sort of retribution against Americentrism, because OSM is so Euro/Britocentric that it is hostile to American conventions. Unfortunately that results in OSM being a poor fit for US mapping.
So, without further ado, from a US perspective, why a "preschool" and a "kindergarten" are not the same thing:
|Private business||Part of a school (which may be public or private)|
|Separate, dedicated operation||Part of a larger school|
|Indistinct curricula (or none at all)||Part of schooling (though optional)|
|Staff are not trained||Staff are trained teachers|
|Accepts children from infant to teenager||Accepts children 4-6yo|
|Concurrent after-school service for school-age children||Not concurrent with other school grades|
|Usually for-profit, those in need require third-party aid||Offered free as part of public schooling (generally; sometimes limited)|
|Voluntary||Voluntary, but strongly recommended|
|Primary goal is to provide a safe place for children while parents are working||Primary goal is to prepare children for elementary school|
Feel free to add to the list, and perhaps the proposed feature can be resurrected. IMO there is a Great Need.

- I second this, today I was looking for a tag for a local preschool. The list above also highlights the canadian way of thought. Tagging a preschool as a kindergarten isn't appropriate! ~ Ingallsn (September 2012)
- If you think that preschool is enough different from kindergarten, then write a proposal in the wiki, explain the differences (mainly as you did here) and that's it. Use the tag. You even don't have to submit a proposal if it is enough obvious for you. From what I read in your post is that a specific tag is justified -- Pieren (talk) 16:39, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
Review and clarification
Can we tighten-up the situations in which this tag should be used? My understanding is that it relates to early-years format education. Should child-care facilities, where no formal education is provided, no be tagged separately. PeterIto (talk) 15:02, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
