I find this tag quite silly and would like to see it into the "Depreciated"-bit bucket... I suggest a vote to remove it from Map Features. Se also Map Features talk about the same Gorm 00:19, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't like this tag either, but there isn't really an equivalent alternative. incline=* doesn't support the vague "it's steep here" info that mappers provide by using highway=incline_steep. We could allow incline=steep_up/down in order to fully replace this tag -- it would be better than the current solution because it at least allows a direction and isn't exclusively for highways. Whether such ill-defined information is of use at all is, of course, questionable. --Tordanik 09:42, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Exactly. incline=* (even with a very vague value) is much better than highway=steep. Starting vote for depreciation in favour of incline=*. Gorm 00:07, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Please can we deprecate this tag? It's a silly bit of tagging for renderers, inclines are not a point feature. Even just incline=up or incline=downon a way is better than this. I saw a diary post about someone being confused about this tag just today. Daveemtb 10:38, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

For the position of a traffic_sign we can use a POI traffic_sign=incline --WalterSchloegl 10:39, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
