User types/roles

I think we have actually 3 types (roles) of users in OSM, admins, moderators and the normal users. John07

I'd like to make some suggestions about the functionality within user diaries, but cannot find the correct place to do this. Any ideas? pedrito1414

GitHub link?

This page should probably point people to the github, so any feature requests can be pointed to the repo's issues page.

Thoughts?

Rename to Website and move Users section to Website/User

I think the concept of an "openstreetmap.org user" is important enough to deserve 1) its own page and 2) a convenient name.

Currently "openstreetmap.org users" are described at Web front end#Users. I propose that we:

  1. Rename Web front end to Website (and add For the website tag, see Key:website. at the top of the page with Template:Otheruses).
  2. Move the Web front end#Users section to Website/User.

This establishes "website user" as a convenient term for "openstreetmap.org user" (which is just too many syllables).
Having the article named "Website" is also consistent with the naming of the GitHub repository (https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website).
This now lets us document important concepts such as "user ids" at Website/User#id (and e.g. have uid redirect there).

There are a couple of challenges with that idea - one is that there are many websites connected with OpenStreetMap, and many others that use OSM data. "OpenStreetMap Web front end", while a bit clumsy, is at least more specfic. Also, lots of OpenStreetMap users rarely go near osm.org itself. SomeoneElse (talk) 09:45, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
"Web front end" is not any more specific than "website". Pretty much any website listed under List of OSM-based services (e.g. https://wheelmap.org/) is technically a "web front-end" for OSM data.
I think it is reasonable that within the context of OSM "the website" is understood to refer to openstreetmap.org.
Just like Wiki describes this wiki (and not just any wiki) and API describes the OSM API (and not just any API).

OpenStreetMap.org website - seems a good title to me (currently redirect) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:01, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Yes that would be completely specific ... I however don't think that we have to be that specific. This is wiki.openstreetmap.org so I think it's entirely reasonable that "the website" is understood to refer to www.openstreetmap.org. --Push-f (talk) 14:43, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
