OSM in the media

I would suggest addition of a link to OpenStreetMap in the media, maybe adjacent to or below the "more news..." link to the News Archive. I didn't want to make this change unilaterally, but rather to propose it for acceptance. --Ceyockey 17:51, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Vodafone releases Wayfinder source code

Vodafone released the Wayfinder source code under BSD license with a small sample of OSM data and invites the community to fix some existing issues.

I don't know if it's worthy to be mentioned in the topnews, but I think it's rather interesting for developers ;)

Remove recurring "Project of the Week" and "Community Updates" news

The news template has become a lot less useful because of the inclusion of these weekly newsletters and periodical projects. 11 out of the 19 entries currently listed are either Community Updates or Project of the Week! Not only are these two utterly over-represented, it's also unnecessary to include those because they have their own start pages and RSS feeds that can be watched by those who want to follow them. I therefore suggest that these shouldn't be added to the News template anymore. --Tordanik 15:15, 12 September 2010 (BST)

I agree. There's a couple of people who are super keen to run this Community Updates thing as a new channel for keeping track of things. It's a worthy aim. In fact it would be great if it was successful, but it'll need to attract more contributors (particular someone who can write better english!) and that will require more readership. If nobody reads it, it'll die out pretty quickly. I don't want to kill this project by removing all links to it, but at the same time the number of links on there is overpowering at the moment (making Template:news less useful)
An interim solution could be to have a "moving" headline. So we only link to the most recent update, and remove all the older links. Perhaps even this is too much, but I'll drop the older links now to show you what I mean.

This already makes the news much more readable, thanks. As long as the number of regular news projects is limited (there already is another, local one, on the German template, so let's hope these don't fragment any further), we can probably use the moving headline. --Tordanik 20:51, 13 September 2010 (BST)

New news

How is news put on here? It looks like the most recent item is from Oct. 2015, surely there are some new things since then? --Marion Barry (talk) 19:01, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

News are added manually. If you know something newsworthy, just add it. :) --Tordanik 18:24, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
Cool, thanks, will do! --Marion Barry (talk) 19:50, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Cross-posting from OSMF blog?

As of now, the OSMF blog appears to be updated quite regularly. We could cross-post some more important news here. RicoElectrico (talk) 14:03, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Sounds good. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 09:37, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
Sounds good, feel free to do this Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 01:57, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Or use https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RSS to just display the blog headlines? --Andrew (talk) 12:23, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Add WeeklyOSM

I think WeeklyOSM should be posted here.

Larger news events like surveys could be "pinned" or WeeklyOSM should have its own column.

--Lectrician1 (talk) 04:39, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

There is a link to weeklyosm.eu below the news already. Or do you want to copy the content over to the wiki? --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 14:31, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
I wanted the WeeklyOSM editions to be shown in the list view or with their own list view. The current link at the bottom is barely visible.
Also, why don't we just host WeeklyOSM on the Wiki? (we would have to contact the creator)
Another related topic is bringing up installing the Translate extension again, but I'll raise that in Talk:Wiki.
--Lectrician1 (talk) 17:35, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

@Tigerfell: I've only just seen this discussion. But the efforts of WeeklyOSM are worth to be displayed and linked as best as possible IMO. Instead of waiting till one provides news here at times, I think it's clever to quote Weekly in the list. The link in the footer will only be clicked by someone who already knows where they want to go, IMHO. --regards, Chris2map (talk) 19:21, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

How do you suggest to mention blog.osm.org then? --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 11:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
I see a difference between news and blogs. The former are current notes, the latter are stories not necessary with actual current topic. In fact if a blog has a current input, it will or can be announced in the (weekly) news. So in a news box I expect daily, weekly or monthly journals. That is why in this case a link to the blogs is ok for me at the bottom, whereas I would accentuate weeklyOSM. --Chris2map (talk) 12:57, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

New forum community.openstreetmap.org

Hey! Should we announce the new forum community.openstreetmap.org ? Blog --Chris2map (talk) 18:15, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

@Chris2map Yes! Done! Lectrician1 (talk) 22:13, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
