Arne's conventions

Arne, who has done most of the mapping in Taiwan for now, follows this scheme which can become the standard:

Road types

• highway:motorway = Freeway (高速公路), 國道 with numbers in the plum flower shaped signs with green brim); current numbers: 1, 2, 3, 3甲, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10

• highway:trunk = Expressway (快速道路 [1]); 省道 with numbers 61 to 99 (currently 61 to 88)

• highway:primary = numbered highways with the white number in the blue sign; 省道 with numbers 1 to 60 (currently 1 to 39)

Tags: ref = Hwy 1A, ref:zh = 台1甲線

• highway:secondary = numbered highways with the black number in the white square, but without county indicators; 縣道 with numbers > 100

Tags: ref = 110B, ref:zh = 110乙

• highway:tertiary = numbered county roads, such as 桃18; 鄉道 with county/city indicator in the number; Available county indicators are:

• All other are "highway = residential", or if in open countryside, "highway = unclassified".

• Narrow one lane roads within cities, often named Lanes or Alleys, are "highway = service" roads.

• You can look at Taoyuan City and Bade City maps [2] in OSM, they are already in good shape.

• For naming, please see section "Naming scheme" below.

• For streets, points of interests and other items on the map, it would be useful if they get the 'is_in' tag:

• The Chinese numbers 甲、乙、丙、丁、戊、己、庚、辛、壬、癸 are mapped to A to J in English

• The Expressways in Taipei don't have numbers, like Civic Blvd (市民大道), JianGuo Expressway (建國快速道路), HuanHe Expressway (環河快速道路) and so on... but they are also trunk roads, i.e. roads with dedicated interchanges and divided traffic.

• The 快速道路 are trunk roads, because the traffic is divided and with dedicated access ramps, like freeways. They also have different rules from normal primary roads.

Naming scheme

Since both renderers, Mapnik and Osmarender can render Han characters by default now, we can actually use the Chinese names in the 'name' tag. We still do have the romanized name for foreigners on the street/place/railway signs.

Recommendation:

• Use the name and its spelling as it is written on the street/place/station sign
• Use the format 'Chinese_Name (Romanized_Name)', e.g. '中正路 (Jhongjheng Rd.)', for the 'name' tag.
• Add a 'name:zh' tag with only the Chinese_Name
• If the road/place/station has additional names in other local languages, add a 'name:$language' tag, where $language is one of the following:

* :nan Minnan (Holo-oe, Ban-lam-gu)
* :hak Hakka
* :ami Amis (Panzah)
* :tay Atayal
* :bnn Bunun
* :ckv Kavalan
* :pwn Paiwan
* :pyu Puyuma
* :dru Rukai
* :ais Sakizaya
* :xsy Saisiat
* :ssf Shao
* :tao Tao
* :trv Truku
* :tsu Tsou

• For place names, use the full name (including classification) for the Chinese name (縣、市、鎮、鄉、里、村 ...), but leave it away for the romanized spelling, except for Counties and Cities (縣、市): e.g '桃園市 (Taoyuan City)' , '富里鄉 (Fuli)'
• For railway stations, append 站 to the Chinese_Name, but _don't_ use 'Station' in the romanized name: e.g. '松山站 (Songshan)'. Use the spelling as you see it on the station signs.

Is_in

In order to have better search results, it is recommended that each road/place/station/other_point_of_interest has a 'is_in' tag to tell the search engine where the location is. As is discussed on [3], it's probably better to use relations for this.

• Tags:

* type (country, county, city, town, suburb, village, hamlet, localty)
* name (the name of the place, e.g. '桃園縣 (Taoyuan County)'
* name:zh (only the Chinese name)

• Members:

* node (depending on the type, all nodes of a lower level. e.g. type 'county' includes all nodes which are 'place=city' or 'place='town'. A relation with type 'town' includes all streets and other items within that town)
* role (blank)

Railway tagging

Stations can be of type 'station' or 'halt'. 'Station' is used for railway stations where Express trains (自強號) stop and 'halt' is used for all other stations.

Items for discussion

• Different road name spelling: road names can be spelled using different spelling systems. Example: Taipei City and Hsinchu City use Hanyu Pinyin (漢語拼音), while other municipalties use Tongyong Pinyin (通用拼音) is different spelling variants. The road 中正路 can be transcribed as Zhongzheng Rd., Jongjeng Rd., Jhongjheng Rd., Jungjeng Rd. Chungcheng Rd. and many others. One suggestion would be to add them all to each way, like:

name:zh = 中正路, name:hanyu_pinyin = Zhongzheng Rd., name:tongyong_pinyin1 = Jongjeng Rd., name:tongyong_pinyin2 = Jhongjheng Rd., name:wade_giles = Chungcheng Rd., etc.

• House numbers. If you have time, please also walk down the roads from intersection to intersection and write down the house numbers (from - to) for each side of the road.
• It would probably a good idea to create a new tag 'address' and 'address:zh' and fill in the official address for an item on the map (e.g. schools, museums, other points of interests, hospitals, etc.)

Note: as of 2009 Tongyong Pinyin has been dumped by the central government.
