Bio

My name is Marco Minghini. I studied at Politecnico di Milano where I got a BSc in Environmental Engineering in 2008, an MSc in Environmental and Geomatics Engineering in 2010 and a PhD in Environmental and Infrastructures Engineering (Geomatics curriculum) in 2014. From 2014 to July 2018 I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the GEOlab of Politecnico di Milano, where my research was in the field of GIS and included topics such as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), Citizen Science, geo-crowdsourcing, Land Use/Land Cover mapping and geo-visualization. Since August 2018 I work as Scientific Project Officer at the European Commission - Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, Directorate B "Growth & Innovation" - Unit B6 "Digital Economy", where I make applied research on Spatial Data Infrastructures and the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive. In 2017 I co-founded GISdevio, a geo-tech startup company based in Como, Italy.

All my research is done using open source software. I am a Charter Member of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo), the Secretary of ISPRS WG IV/4 "Collaborative Crowdsourced Cloud Mapping (C³M)". I am a regular presenter at FOSS4G global and local conference and I was the Secretary and main organizer of the FOSS4G Europe 2015 conference which took place in Como in 2015. OpenStreetMap is not just part of my research work, but also my free time. I love mapping (my OSM username is mingo23), I love speaking and teaching about OSM and even more I love organizing mapping events. In late 2016 I helped in the foundation of PoliMappers, the first European chapter of the YouthMappers worldwide network of university students. Since August 2018 have been the mentor of PoliMappers. In February 2017 I became a Voting Member of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). Since November 2017 I am a proud Member of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. I was the Chair of the Academic Track at State of the Map 2018, held in Milan (Italy) in July 2018, and the co-chair of the Academic Track at State of the Map 2019, held in Heidelberg (Germany) in September 2019. Since 2018 I am a member of the OSM Foundation State of the Map Organizing Committee. From 2018 to 2021 I have been a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Open Geospatial Data, Software and Standards.

Applications developed

  • A set of Python modules for GRASS GIS to compare OpenStreetMap against authoritative road network datasets. The scripts allow users to perform customized analysis to evaluate the completeness and geometrical accuracy of the OSM road dataset using any (user-provided) reference dataset. This is an ongoing work. The most up-to-date version of the code is available here, while a Web Processing Service exposing the procedure (currently only Step 1 of 3) is available here.
