About me

I'm involved with Free Software since 1994 and since 2001 my work is entirely based on it. I started working with GIS (mainly web GIS applications and PostGIS spatial database) in 2004. As far as I avoid proprietary software, I don't want to use non-free geodata, this is way I had to participate to the OpenStreetMap project.

I'm drawing the Map since 2005 using GPS, motorbike and car. I wish also to free existing geodata, especially the ones produced by Public Administration bodies. This lead my commitment into GFOSS.it, the Geographic Free and Open Source Software Italian Association.

Why I present myself for the Board

The OSM license change has drawn my attention: I think that by one hand it was necessary (CC-By licenses do not fit well with geodata), on the other hand it is a very dangerous step. Now that the mappers give all the rights on the data to the OSM Foundation, the Foundation itself is called to an important and delicate mission, several steps beyond than just running the servers.

So I think that the OSMF needs the engagement of several people, with an international point of view.

I hope to contribute to the Foundation bringing-in the Free Software experience; Debian, Software in the Public Interest, Free Software Foundation: there are many Projects doing great things, working for many years solving technical an management problems, without loosing the original spirit (the free and open knowledge) and avoiding traps and sabotages.

I don't have management roles in that Projects, but I contribute with my work regularly. My interest was beyond the pure technical matter: I was always also interested in how those methods produce so excellent results.

I think also that the Foundation can learn from troubles and errors which others have already faced, I think of Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia.

So my hope is to study all the existing experiences and distill them into the best recipes to enforce the OSM Foundation in reaching its goals.

Finally I wish also to contribute in defining the Local Chapters matters.

Mi occupo di software libero dal 1994, dal 2001 il mio lavoro si basa esclusivamente su di esso ed ho iniziato ad occuparmi di GIS (applicazioni web GIS e database spaziale PostGIS) nel 2004. Come evito l'uso di software proprietario, evito anche le mappe digitali non libere, per questo motivo ho "dovuto" partecipare al progetto OpenStreetMap.

Oltre a raccogliere dati in prima persona cerco di favorire la liberazione dei dati geografici esistenti, specialmente quelli prodotti dalla amministrazioni pubbliche. Da questo nasce anche il mio impegno in GFOSS.it.

Perché impegnarsi nella OSM-Foundation

Ho seguito con attenzione il cambio di licenza di OSM, ritenendolo per un verso necessario (le CC-By si adattano male ai dati geografici), ma per altri versi pericoloso: il fatto che i mappatori cedano tutti i diritti in favore della OSM Foundation pone quest'ultima in una posizione molto delicata e le assegna dei compiti importanti che vanno al di là della sola gestione dei server.

Pertanto credo che la OSMF richieda un impegno diretto da parte di molte persone e con una visione internazionale.

Spero di poter contribuire alla Foundation portando in OSM le esperienze del Software Libero; Debian, Software in the Public Interest, Free Software Foundation: sono realtà che funzionano egregiamente da anni e sono state in grado di affrontare problemi organizzativi e di gestione senza perdere di vista gli obiettivi originali (la libera diffusione delle conoscenze) e senza impantanarsi nelle inevitabili difficoltà.

Pur non avendo ricoperto ruoli di responsabilità in tali associazioni, ho partecipato alle comunità contribuendo con il mio lavoro. Oltre all'aspetto puramente tecnico mi sono interessato alle dinamiche sociali e organizzative che determinano il successo di questo modo di fare ricerca e sviluppo.

Credo che la Foundation possa imparare anche dai problemi che altri hanno già affrontato e dagli errori che sono stati commessi, la storia dalla Fondazione Wikimedia e del progetto Wikipedia ha molto da insegnarci.

Infine la definizione dei Local Chapter di OpenStreetMap è un altro argomento che mi sta a cuore e che spero possa tradrusi in qualcosa di concreto per la realtà italiana.
