Tile Usage Policy - Contacting

Hello Mr. Burgess,

I am CTO at OpenFire, publisher of an ERP for building trades.

Our software has been using your tile service for some time to present map information for our customers, but consultation of this information was done in a marginal way. We have very recently upgraded our software to provide more tools that present map views based on your service, and the use of this service may no longer be marginal.

We would therefore like to contact you to discuss possible options for more intensive use of your tile service.

Best regards,

Paul Le Coz plc@openfire.fr

Tile Usage Policy 12

Dear Mr. Burgess,

Our company would like to distribute a client application that uses OSM tiles for background maps. The usage page (https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/tiles/) states that we have to receive permission prior that from the System Administrator. Would you please advise us how we can receive such permission.

Kind regards, Gergely Csernák gcsernak@geometria.hu

Tile Usage Policy 11

Dear Mr. Burgess,

I'm not sure how to otherwise contact you concerning the Tile Usage Policy, so I try my luck here :) How do you define heavy usage? By number of users, by size of the area? Our app is displaying maps covering a Swiss city including surroundings, starting at zoom-level 11 and going down to level 19. We currently have about 3-4 users a week, it could go up to around 30. They use the map to report broken public lighting (data points we overlay ourselves). Does this qualify as heavy usage?

Kind regards, Stefani Gerber

Hello,

I am a student at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, currently working on a project requiring an offline map of Banff, Alberta, Canada. What steps would we need to take to download tiles of Banff at a zoom level of 17 and possibly 18 if needed? The download would roughly be 759 tiles at zoom level 17, and 2925 tiles at zoom level 18.

I understand zoom level 18 may be too much on the server, however it would greatly benefit my team’s development if we were able to zoom in deep into the map. I look forward to hearing back from you,

Dylan Hildebrand

Tile Usage Policy 9

Hello Mr. Burgess, I am a student from germany and I developed an android app for navigating around the campus of the University of Osnabrück. To provide the User with a proper Background, I would like to use OSM-Tiles. The app is supposed to be released in the Android Store for the students for free. So I would like to ask you for the permission to use the Mapnik tileserver for this project.

Best regards, Patrick Huesmann

Hi,

I am the current maintainer of Shotwell and we have a patch set that adds image browsing by geolocation on a map and image tagging via a map. The patch set currently uses the OSM tile server for testing purposes but is not available in any released version.

Since Shotwell (currently) is the default image management software for Fedora (will be changed in 28 to GNOME Photos) and Ubuntu (will be changed probably with 18.10), there might be a reasonably large user base. But I do not have any numbers whatsoever and I would not really want to just unleash this without any permission.

My main plan would be to piggy-back on GNOME's mapbox tile access, but that also needs a (pending) policy within GNOME.

So I would like to also ask for OSM direct usage permission as well in case of using the GNOME access doesn't work out. I would also be ok with setting up a mapproxy server, I just do not have the knowledge or power to do the tile hosting myself.

The tile access is not enabled by default, the map widget has to be enabled through some settings

Hello, Mr. Burgess,

I have developed a program for printing paper charts from OpenSeaMap. (I am already in contact with them). The program can be found here: https://www.premium-kojencharter.de/ausruestung/pkccharttool/. It has the following properties:

  • works browser-like ie. downloads only tiles needed for immediate display
  • caches tiles locally (OpenStreetMap tiles are cached 1 month by default, OpenSeaMap tiles 1 week)
  • uses 1 thread for download
  • identifies itself with a user agent string of "PKCChartTool"

I hope this is ok for you. Thanks Thomas

Hi Mr. Burgess.

We are want to change Google Maps to OSM, we have a GPS tracking system and we would like to use the OSM servers. Please let us know any additional requirement

Thanks. Ale.

Tile Usage Policy 5

Hello M. Burgess,

I work for a company building web apps in logistics domain. We are working on a service using the OSM tile and I would like to request a permission for using the OSM servers.

Thank you for your time.

Tile Usage Policy 4

Hi,

I'm working at a consulting agency with a small number of clients. We wanted to know if it was possible to get permission to use your tile server? We'll operate under the assumption we cannot per your Tile Usage Policy, but we would appreciate a confirmation either way.

Thanks For Your Time, Fernando

Tile Usage Policy 3

Hi, same question as others: just want to verify that it's ok to start using your tiles on our website and that we won't exceed your limits. Thanks, Robbie

Tile Usage Policy 2

Hi,

I have the same question about tile usage as Marcel Maron: What are the tile usage limits? How the the tile zoom levels relate to scale? ( the tile useage policy states that zoom level 17 and beyond are forbidden except with prior approval)?

Your help will determine the usage of OSM in platform. Thanks in advance, Eugenia Hesse

Map tiles not updated in 'ages'

Jannuary 25. 2011

Hi

It seems mapnik tiles of this area http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=55.587&lon=11.518&zoom=11&layers=M

have not been updated for a long time for zoom levels 10 and 11. I have been editing this area heavily. How can this be?

Who should I contact to clarify this?

Problem with password sync between Tiles@Home and openstreetmap login

Hi,

I'm running several Tiles@Home servers and am noticing that since the change of my password on the openstreetmap site, they fail on password issues ( Server: ERROR: Authentication failed - please check your username and password in 'authentication.conf'.l). I think there is a password sync issue between the tiles@home servers and the openstreetmap servers? How can I fix this?

Grtz,

J

Hieronymousch you are asking the wrong person. Tiles@Home is not by run by any of the core OSM administrators. Best to ask elsewhere, likely the OSM irc channel is best. -- Firefishy 13:39, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

SVN commit

Hi,

Tom Hughes told me to contact you. I would like to submit a little tweak I have made on the "generate_tiles.py" example file that makes it run much faster. It was extremely useful to me on one of the projects I have been working on, and I think it would be fair to share my changes with the community.

How can I do so, please ? Do I need a SVN account ?

Tile Logs?

Hello, i'm a student of TU-Berlin currently writing on my diploma thesis, which is loadbalancing in Peer to Peer Networks. The practical implementation part will be a P2P-Network of Tile-Servers with a full renderstack (PostGis->Mapnik->Tirex->Mod_tile) on each peer. I will use this Network to evaluate different load measure methods for load Balancing. The Simulation will run on servers of my university. To make these tests more realistic i am looking for real server logs describing which tile (x,y,z) at what time was served. Could you help me finding something like that?

The theme seems also to be interisting for the OSM -Projekt:

Thank you for your help. Best regards Stefan

Usage of Tile Cache

Hi,

I have been developing a web application which has been using OpenStreetMap to provide background mapping.

We are using OpenLayers and connecting to a tile server at following address.

http://tile.openstreetmap.org

I have a few queries about usage limits - where is the best place to post questions of this nature?

Regards

John

You should check out Tile usage policy instead. --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 17:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Tile Usage Policy requeriments

Hi, we are developing a web application that will use OSM, in the tile usage policy is mentioned that one of the requisites for the usage is that heavy users get a permit from the System Administrators, how can I make a more direct contact to describe the application and the usage to determine if it's ok to use OSM for this purpose. The usage of your data servers would be only on the first stages of the project.

I have been blocked

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the place to post this. I was experimenting with the Mapquest tiles and downloaded a portion of a city including levels 17 and 18, which I believe led to me being blocked for a usage violation. I apologize for doing this. I was wondering if the block is permanent or if there is any way to have it lifted.

Thanks, Matt

Download tiles at zoom levels 17 and higher

Hi Jon Burgess, i would like to download tiles at zoom levels 17 and higher, what should i do?

Tile Usage Policy

Hi Jon,

My Name is Marcle Maron, I am a GIS analyst for Woodside Ltd, We are situated in Perth, Australia. We would like to use the Open Street maps as a base layer in an internal WMS, I have a few questions; What are the tile usage limits? ( we would be using the tiles as a base layer that would turn on at scales 1:50,000 to 1:5000) How the the tile zoom levels relate to scale? ( the tile useage policy states that zoom level 17 and beyond are forbidden except with prior approval)?

Any help you could give me would be much appreciated

Tiles Zoom-Level 17-18

Hey Jon Burgess,

I´m working for a consultant company in Germany. Actually we have a project with a customer.

My company shall develop a software to view geocoordinatal data. There is a list with points of latitude and longitude. These points shall draw on map. So the customer could see where the points are. For this development we have to use a offline map because of protection of privacy. So we want to use OSM. Therefor I would like to ask you if we can download tiles zoom-level 17-18 of the region bavaria in Germany. Is there a possibility for downloading these tiles? If you permit can you tell me how?

Thanks in advance for your response,

S. Wagner

How to contact Jburgess?

Hi,

I'm developing an Android app and an adapted web application http://www.track-and-find.me/. It gathers GPS coordinates of your (moving) Android device and sends these lat/lon to a friend, so she can find you in case you get lost. Here is an example: http://www.track-and-find.me/decode-sms.html

Can I use the tile-servers for this? I don't believe this will produce many hits, but who knows?

I didn't find any other way to contact Jburgess. The policy-page only says "contact Administrators" but I cannot find out how. Thnx in advance!

Heinrich

tile.openstreetmap.org uses an invalid security certificate

Hi Jon.

Firefox warns about "tile.openstreetmap.org uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for *.tile.openstreetmap.org (Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)"

As Heinrich, I didn't find another way to contact administrators. Maybe putting a link to OSM user profile (http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/<>) can help to PM him/her.

Tile Usage Policy: web browser usage

Hi Jon, my understanding of Tile_usage_policy#Technical_Usage_Requirements is that a web app can use the tile server (in our case it would be trough OpenLayers i.e. OpenLayers.Layer.OSM). But as our client is behind a firewall, all end users (let say 100 - not all at the same time) would be seen as a unique user. Is such a usage still OK? Normally they will stay at level 10, getting closer at specific points (where they have their monitored equipments). The web app can connect to other servers, but the users prefer the OpenStreetMap/OpenSeaMap view (intended was a simpler - and installed - geoserver/postgis server based on Natural Earth data).

Edit: ProxySimplePHP5 just seems to be easier than duplicating a full tile server. Anyway interested in your answer.

acceptance of an application

Hi,

can I obtain some sort of acceptance of a application that uses OSM tiles from http://tile.openstreetmap.org ?

thanks. Chris

Tiles timestamp

Hi,

is there a way to ask the server for the creation-timestamp of the tiles before download? If so it could be used to implement an effective caching mechanism.

Alexej

Proxy limitations?

I represent a high-traffic site. We are investigating the possibility of proxying HTTP requests for our map tiles to OSM with heavy disk caching on our end. We want to be good netizens but need to know some additional technical considerations besides those listed on the wiki. Can you please contact me directly for an offline conversation?

Tiles at 17-18

Hey Jon,

I'm looking to get access to a region of tiles at levels 17-18.

The project is to develop an offline map due to privacy/security issues and we want to use OSM. How do I go about asking to download specific regions at the 17-18 zoom level?

Additionally, what are the steps required to do this.

Thank you for any/all assistance.

Alex

Question about server's limits

Hello,

I am about to start a business directory, where all businesses will be displayed on a map. The users will be able to input an address and the map will show this location with all the businesses in the area. The estimated traffic will be 50,000 visitors per day. Can I use your tiles server for this project? Will there be any fees?

Thank you for your time in advance,

Nick Antoniadis

Hi, you should probably install your own tile server, see https://switch2osm.org.
What the size of the area? It's an import factor. --Nospam2005 (talk) 19:32, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your fast reply! The area will be the whole Greece country. --Nantoniadis (talk) 19:37, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
I had a question about a similar issue, therefore I'm following the page.
I installed a tile server, the purpose was to experiment before making a worldwide server. I did participate to the first switch2osm install party in Paris and got some requirements for the machine and some more info I can share, just send me a message.

Tile Usage

Hi,

I am planning to develop an application which uses OSM map tiles. The application will be used by approximately 300 to 500 people per day. I am also planning to cache(save) the map tiles onto the deployed machine in order to reduce the number of map tile requests. The user may zoom up to level 10. The user will zoom only parts of the world.

With this details in mind, I have a couple of questions.

1. Can I hook my application to use the OSM map tile server or should I host my own server? (I am bit worried because, I don't have enough resources to host my own server)

2. Can the map tiles be saved on to our local machine?

Awaiting a favorable reply.

Thanks in Advance.

Tejus Madan

Tile Usage

Hello, I am hoping to roll out a new mapping application for clients and am just wondering what the usage numbers for the tiles are. I imagine that initially there would not be heavy usage but could be down the track. Just want to make sure that this is something that is acceptable and is covered under the license for using openLayers. Regards Daniel Lane

Tile Downloading

I need to download map tiles for zoom levels 3 thru 7 that are in the slippy map format and have 8 bits per pixel. Where can these map tiles be found and would it require special permission to download these tiles?

Tile Usage Policy 4

Hi,

I am developing a software for my company which uses tiles at zoom-levels 10 to 16 for large areas. Downloads will only occur a few times per month.

I want to ensure that it is ok with the servers and the tile usage policy.

Who can I contact to get more information, thank you.

OSM Tile Usage

Hello,

We are using your tile server as an interim solution while we get our own tile server up and running. The usage intensity is pretty low. It is however behind a proxy, so all calls to the OSM tile server will originate from the same address. Just wanted to notify you to make sure that it is OK with the servers and the tile usage policy.

Thank you in advance,

Tom

Usage of tile server

Hi,

we have developed an app to accompany peope if they are walking alone. Users can be accompanied by an professional partner and by a friend in parallel. In addition, the user can start an emergency call. In this case, the user is connected to a professional emergency center (to get help as quick as possible).

Today we use Apple and Google maps to show the user where he / his friend is.

But in many cases, OpenStreetsMap provides a much more detailled map (which is espacially in this case better).

The app is for free!

Can we use the tile-servers to show the map (and help people to feel better)?

I didn't find any other way to contact the admins.

Thanks in advance, Albert

Tile Usage Policy

Hi,

I would like to request a permission for using the OSM tiles for the website of one of our customers. We plan to use ProxySimplePHP to keep the requests against the OSM server low.

Thanks

Sven

Tile Usage Policy

Hello Mr Burgess,

I work for a company building an application for our country's environment protection agency. One of the requirements is to use an offline map of protected areas. For this purpose I would like to systematically download tiles at zoom levels down to 18, (maybe 19 if possible?) which will then be displayed offline with leafletjs. I would like to cover 4 areas along the border between Romania and Bulgaria. By my estimation this would require a total of about 90k tiles at zoom level 18. The download would only be done once. I realise this is an imposition and would like to proceed in whatever manner is convenient for you.

Thank you kindly for your time,

Lucian Brancovean

Tile Usage Policy

Jon,

Can you contact me with regards to using OpenStreetMaps servers for our law enforcement applications and to discuss typical bandwidth required if we were to setup our own server to provide map data to or customers.

Thanks,

Martin Westwood (Director of R&D, SmartCOP)

Use of OSM tiles in Mixed Reality Application

Hello Mr. Burgess, My name is Ivan and I am the developer of Easy Map 3d, a free Windows mixed reality app that you can find here https://www.microsoft.com/store/apps/9P4LGPND1VBP Actually I am using Bing Maps but I would like to add also OpenStreetMap standard tile layer. I would like to request a permission for using the OSM servers. Thank you for your time Ivan

Mapping for a new web site about the people of Ulverston killed in WW1

I hope I am coming through to the right person. I am developing a web site (ulverstonfallen.uk) about the people of Ulverston killed in action during World War One. I need to map 175 locations in Ulverston (UK), each being the address of someone killed in action. I need to display a map on our web site, I’ve just read your ‘Tile Usage Policy’. Can I use your servers to display the map? Cheers Paul Chappell.

Use of layer in application

Hello, I currently have two applications in the playStore and we wanted to use your leyer through y.png, but we have noticed that in some devices it does not show the map.

Some other requirement is needed for its use, or what would be the case that will not be shown in any devices.

Tile Access Recently Forbidden

Hi. Since 2011 we have been distributing a java application that uses osm tiles. You have recently begun denying requests for tiles. What requirements have changed? Is is possible for us to get a 'waiver' while we figure out how to meet requirements? Or perhaps we just need to request approval, as far as I know that was never done. We are https://www.sustain.specifysoftware.org/products/specify-6/. Thanks.

Tile Access problem

Dear Mr Burges, France digues is a french national association. For several years, we suggest to our members a java application (Sirs, https://www.sirs-digues.info/ ; more information : http://www.france-digues.fr/sirs-digues/) to facilitate the work of dike managers in France. We whish to use osm tiles from openstreet map’s servers to support our application. In accordance to the Tile Usage Policy’s requirements (https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/tiles/) we would like your permission to do so. Could you tell us the best way to process ? Best regards,

Connection to tileserver refused after some time

Hi,

I opened a discussion about a problem affecting me (and probably other users) when accessing the public tile servers from São Paulo, Brazil.

People at the forum told me to contact you for help, and this seems to be the only way to do so.

The forum topic may be acessed here

TL;DR: I am using JOSM to make edits in and around the metro area of São Paulo, Brazil. Everything is fine for a few minutes, then every single connection is refused. Switching to use other tile servers (like Bowser, for example) makes everything work fine again no matter how long the session is. Traceroute shows that the DNS server is redirecting me to use UFPR's mirror.

I believe that there is some policy at their server/router/firewall to block users for excessive usage (I am not being excessive! Just editing in JOSM!), but I do not have the remotest clue on how to solve it.

Thanks.

The Usage Policy 13

Dear Mr. Burgess,

I am doing a project that turns a GPX-track into an accelerated video of 1920x1080 with 30 fps and a length up to 30 minutes (the upper limit is about 1500-2000 tiles 256x256) - because x30 speed-up. In this way, I will save bike rides (with additional data on speed, time, position, elevation, etc.). I need to use size 16 tiles for this. I will save the tiles locally to avoid reloading. The program is written in Python. I will use the User-agent "GPXToVideo - contact:sovaz1997@yandex.ru". This program for personal use. Tracks up to 100-150 km long, at the moment there are only 2 tracks (large), the rest are in familiar places that are enough to load once. Downloading in 1 threads (max. 2). I would be very happy if you allow and describe the restrictions. Thanks you! P. S. Sorry for my English)

Regards, Oleg.

Missing file information

Hello! And thanks for your upload - but some extra info is necessary.

Sorry for bothering you about this, but it is important to know source of the uploaded files.

Are you the author of image File:BrockCentre.png ?

Or is it copied from some other place (which one?)?

Please, add this info to the file page - something like "I took this photo" or "downloaded from -website link-" or "I took this screeshot of program XYZ".

Doing this would be already very useful.

Licensing - photos

In case that you are the author of the image: Would you agree to open licensing of this image, allowing its use by anyone (similarly to your OSM edits)?

In case where it is a photo you (except relatively rare cases) author can make it available under a specific free license.

Would you be OK with CC0 (it allows use without attribution or any other requirement)?

Or do you prefer to require attribution and some other things using CC-BY-SA-4.0?

If you are the author: Please add {{CC0-self}} to the file page to publish the image under CC0 license.

You can also use {{CC-BY-SA-4.0-self}} to publish under CC-BY-SA-4.0 license.

Once you add missing data - please remove {{Unknown|subcategory=uploader notified January 2022}} from the file page.

Licensing - other images

If it is not a photo situation gets a bit more complicated.

See Drafts/Media file license chart that may help.

note: if you took screenshot of program made by someone else, screenshot of OSM editor with aerial imagery: then licensing of that elements also matter and you are not a sole author.

note: If you downloaded image made by someone else then you are NOT the author.

Note that in cases where photo is a screenshot of some software interface: usually it is needed to handle also copyright of software itself.

Note that in cases where aerial imagery is present: also licensing of an aerial imagery matter.

Help

Feel free to ask for help if you need it - you can do it for example by asking on Talk:Wiki: new topic.

Please ask there if you are not sure what is the proper next step. Especially when you are uploading files that are not your own work or are derivative work (screenshots, composition of images, using aerial imagery etc).

If you are interested in wider discussion about handling licencing at OSM Wiki, see this thread.
