Welcome! ...wikitravel ideas

Hey Jpatokal. Welcome to OSM!

I'm a wiki traveller! (User:Nojer2), and actually the wikitravel map problem is one of the reasons I got interested in the OSM project in the first place.

Take a look at the MediaWiki Extensions. These are mostly my work, so I'm keen to get some feedback on those, but I'm not sure if that's something you'd be interested in using at this stage.

As you were saying, the Osmarender XSLTs could be of more interest, since it gives you SVG output, and so there's the potential to do some manual post-processing to cleanup the map in places where the renderer gets it wrong, and to add other wikitravel information; Numbered markers for the bars/resturants/hotels perhaps. You'd miss out on improvments made to the maps later, that's the only problem.

We have a wiki page here called Collaboration with Wikipedia. Perhaps we should make a one called "Collaboration with Wikitravel" to lay down the wikitravel requirements in more detail. Do feel free to dive in a make wiki edits here by the way. It's a bit more chaotic (messy) than on wikitravel.
