Like highways, railroad tracks have been imported from TIGER data and they share the same problems like unconnected segments, wrong tagging, missing bridges and railroad crossings and positions that are frequently off quite a lot. So a review is necessary as it is for highways. Additionally user added line are also within this page and can and need to be reviewed. This page is currently a work in progress, now in early alpha as its basic structure has largely emerged as stable.

See LVSW; ambiguities remain.

Columbia Basin Railroad (CBRR)

CBRR connects Ephrata, Air Base, Moses Lake, Wheeler, Schrag, Warden, Othello and Connell. Established in 1986 as part of the Washington Central Railroad Company, who bought 230 miles (370 km) of railway in Central Washington from Burlington Northern, the CBRR is the busiest shortline railroad in Washington in 2014, with over 10,000 carloads annually of agricultural and industrial shipments.

For operating convenience, the current physical interchange with both UP and BNSF is handled through the Longview Switching Company (LVSW), jointly owned by UP and BNSF headquartered in Longview, Washington. Northwest Railway Museum, Snoqualmie Valley Railroad (????)

In King County, the Northwest Railway Museum owns the historic Snoqualmie Depot, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of railroad right-of-way and 5.5 miles (8.9 km) of the former Northern Pacific Railway North Bend branch. This railway was built in 1889 as the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway (SLSE) and was Seattle's response to the Northern Pacific's selecting Tacoma as their terminus. The SLSE was later taken over by the Northern Pacific. It operates a heritage railroad called the Snoqualmie Valley Railroad. This 5-mile (8.0 km) common carrier railroad allows museum visitors to experience a train excursion aboard antique railroad coaches through the Upper Snoqualmie Valley. Trains operate on Saturdays and Sundays from April through October and in December, and carry over 47,000 passengers per year.

Railtrails and "Transitways"

A railtrail uses a former railroad right-of-way (ROW) for equestrian, bicycle or hiking paths, preserving the ROW for possible future re-use as a railway while providing a useful service in the meantime. These are often tagged highway=cycleway or highway=footway depending on whether they prefer or allow bicycle or pedestrian traffic. It is OK to tag both railway=abandoned and highway=cycleway if it is the case that an abandoned railway became a railtrail (for bicycle use, for example). The Railbanking process was formed to support the creation of rail trails and for the possible future re-use as a railway.

Within Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, there is a section of line which is nearly completely a railway=abandoned and also a type=route bus=designated. The ROW used to be the Union Pacific terminal line which provided passenger rail service. This might be considered "railtrail" but as there are parallel segments for pedestrians and bicycles in places, it seems better considered as a "transitway."

There are entries in the Abandoned tables (below) which contain significant segments of railtrail (usually ped/bike). It can be a bit of a coin-toss whether they should be here or there. They may be found in both if the entirety of the right of way is not being used for trail.

These tables are incomplete. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!
