Like highways, railroad tracks have been imported from TIGER data and they share the same problems like unconnected segments, wrong tagging, missing bridges and railroad crossings and positions that are frequently off quite a lot. So a review is necessary as it is for highways. Additionally user added line are also within this page and can and need to be reviewed. This page is currently a work in progress, now in early alpha as its basic structure has largely emerged as stable.

Due to recent wiki and associated software upgrades, the map details are not-quite-correct. To fix, please select "Transport Map" from the upper-right "layers stack" icon to see Washington railroads. As this is a "live" slippy map, it can be panned and zoomed; zoom in to see rail infrastructure networks, tracks and stations.

In Washington State, UP has 532 miles of track, employs 311 and both originated and terminated over 268,000 rail cars (2016 data). Major commodities shipped and received are intermodal-wholesale, recyclables/municipal waste, grain (especially wheat and flour), lumber and building materials, assembled autos, refrigerated products (especially fruit), paper, petroleum products, chemicals and consumer products.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)

Washington State Department of Transpiration is not a rail operator per se but is the largest mileage shortline owner in the state of Washington, owning the Central Washington branches of the Palouse Branch, Hooper Line and CW Branch. WSDOT has periodic requests for proposals (RFP)s to select operators for their lines.

Owned by Patriot Rail Corporation, which was acquired by SteelRiver Infrastructure Partners in 2012. Operates freight service on an 8.5-mile route from the Weyerhaeuser Company mill in Longview to the junction just outside Kelso city limits. From there, traffic is either switched to the Patriot Woods Railroad, formally known as the Weyerhaeuser Woods Railroad, where it is transported to Weyerhaeuser's Green Mountain Sawmill at Toutle or it is switched to the BNSF/UP joint main line for movement to either Seattle or Portland, Oregon. See LVSW; ambiguities remain.

Columbia Basin Railroad (CBRR)

CBRR connects Ephrata, Air Base, Moses Lake, Wheeler, Schrag, Warden, Othello and Connell. Established in 1986 as part of the Washington Central Railroad Company, who bought 230 miles (370 km) of railway in Central Washington from Burlington Northern, the CBRR is the busiest shortline railroad in Washington in 2014, with over 10,000 carloads annually of agricultural and industrial shipments.

For operating convenience, the current physical interchange with both UP and BNSF is handled through the Longview Switching Company (LVSW), jointly owned by UP and BNSF headquartered in Longview, Washington. Traffic includes lumber and forest products, steel, paper and chemicals. Certain owner/operator relationships between CLC and LVSW seem ambiguous, clarification is appreciated.

In King County, the Northwest Railway Museum owns the historic Snoqualmie Depot, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of railroad right-of-way and 5.5 miles (8.9 km) of the former Northern Pacific Railway North Bend branch. This railway was built in 1889 as the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway (SLSE) and was Seattle's response to the Northern Pacific's selecting Tacoma as their terminus. The SLSE was later taken over by the Northern Pacific. It operates a heritage railroad called the Snoqualmie Valley Railroad. This 5-mile (8.0 km) common carrier railroad allows museum visitors to experience a train excursion aboard antique railroad coaches through the Upper Snoqualmie Valley. Trains operate on Saturdays and Sundays from April through October and in December, and carry over 47,000 passengers per year.

Railtrails and "Transitways"

A railtrail uses a former railroad right-of-way (ROW) for equestrian, bicycle or hiking paths, preserving the ROW for possible future re-use as a railway while providing a useful service in the meantime. These are often tagged highway=cycleway or highway=footway depending on whether they prefer or allow bicycle or pedestrian traffic. It is OK to tag both railway=abandoned and highway=cycleway if it is the case that an abandoned railway became a railtrail (for bicycle use, for example). The Railbanking process was formed to support the creation of rail trails and for the possible future re-use as a railway.

Within Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, there is a section of line which is nearly completely a railway=abandoned and also a type=route bus=designated. The ROW used to be the Union Pacific terminal line which provided passenger rail service. This might be considered "railtrail" but as there are parallel segments for pedestrians and bicycles in places, it seems better considered as a "transitway."

There are entries in the Abandoned tables (below) which contain significant segments of railtrail (usually ped/bike). It can be a bit of a coin-toss whether they should be here or there. They may be found in both if the entirety of the right of way is not being used for trail.

These tables are incomplete. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

John Wayne Pioneer Trail

The John Wayne Pioneer Trail follows much of the railway roadbed of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road ) for 300 miles (480 km) across two-thirds of Washington from the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains to the Idaho border. There are sections in the middle of this trail that have active railroad and as such are on road connections around Othello. From Tacoma/Seattle to Othello this railroad was electrified and as such the substations are still around and are being mapped. Yards

It would be very kind for more OSM volunteers to continue to build up this statewide "Yards" table (stub) with status on every single Washington rail yard. It is incomplete as there are dozens of rail yards in Washington. Currently yards are moderately correct, but can use improvement from recent aerial/sattelite imagery or newer real-world data. Please keep this Yards table updated as you do.
