Trimble Data Marketplace - previously WeoGeo Market - is providing OpenStreetMap data and custom extracts in various formats. Planet.osm is listed as a "dataset" available for free on the "Trimble Data Marketplace". After registering, users can extract their area of interest by drawing polygons on a map, and choose from output formats including Shapefiles and KML, and finally specify "layer" filters (filtering by tags).
The following is intended to be a quick-guide to extracting OpenStreetMap data via Trimble Data Marketplace:
If you have not already signed up for an account, click on the Register link in the upper right corner of the page. A registration form will be displayed and you will be given the option to either provide your name and email address or create an account with social sign-in (Google, Yahoo, or Facebook). If you select the social sign-in option, you can immediately move onto step two. Otherwise, if you entered your name and email, you will first have to click on the confirmation link sent to your inbox to verify your account.
Once successfully registered, the Map Tools will now be available.
You can create an Area of Interest and customize your selection to include specific Map Features as well as change the output file format and Datum/Projection. Here, we select the Amenity, Building, and Highway layers for the Seattle area. Note: you can drag and drop a KML polygon (no larger than 1,000 vertices) for more precise Regions.
Once you are satisfied with your selection, simply click 'Order' and check the OSM license agreement button then continue through the Checkout process. You will be notified via email when your order has been processed successfully.
Processing time depends on the size and complexity of the request. For example, the job shown in this walkthrough took approximately one minute before I got my email notification. As more layers are selected or a larger area is requested, processing time will increase.
