Conventions on Belgian rail roads
The goal is to make OSM contain enough detail for a rail road route planner to be able to work with the ways and nodes, type rail. Hence, the vital aspect of linking together correctly the different lines at their proper bifurcations, and adding stations and halts into these ways precisely.
All conventions are currently under discussion and vote here. Please add your opinion there.
Potential datasets
I have talked to the head of unit at NMBS ATLAS Tracking project, and NMBS is willing to donate one week of GPS nodes of their cargo traffic. This one week suffices to see most of the network covered, and can be used to add most lines correctly. Furthermore, I learnt that a database exists of:
- All level_crossings in Belgium.
- All so-called Dienstregelingsnodes, containing the location of vital nodes in the network, where two possible itineraries connect. These are among others, all stations and halts, and all bifurcations, as intersections of two lines. Whenever we would create a train route planner using OSM, and NMBS would encourage us to do so with this data (!), these nodes are vital.
The GPS nodes of cargo will be donated, on the same terms as AND did in Holland: some acknowledgement and positive publicity. About the level_crossings and Dienstregelingsnodes, I have persons at Infrabel to meet, but not a guarantee at the moment that we can get a hold of that data.
UPDATE 22.04.08: I have received a 62MB puretext file with tons of GPS coordinates. I will analyse them for inclusion with the help of the OSM Leuven group.
FAQ on Belgian Railways
1. I've tagged Dendermonde-Puurs heritage railway in April, but even now it is still not visible on the map (only visible in edit mode). What is the problem?
- I checked this rail road, at first sight nothing is wrong. The railway appears correctly on www.informationfreeway.org (rendered by tiles@home). I did reorder those segments, they where pointing all ways :). I also merged it to one way.
- Still some things need to be changed on that railway. The stations must be part of the railway itself, not a separate node. If the ways are straight you don't need to put that many nodes. --Raskas 19:01, 16 July 2007 (BST)
2. Do we need to enter level_crossings or not?
- Infrabel has GPS-data of all its LC's. It is hoped we can enter them all in OSM and add these nodes into existing rail road ways and nodes.
3. How do we treat "bundels/faisceaux"? They're huge and I can't track 'em by riding normal passenger trains.
- It is hoped we can solve this problem by using the NMBS dataset in 2008, containing all GPS nodes of one week of activity on the Belgian network. This dataset contains fans and normal lines, run by cargo locs.
4. What is the difference between a station and a halt? What do I enter in the node description?
- The discussion is open on the Talk page. Basically, a station is a large building with NMBS/Infrabel personnel, selling tickets and regulating traffic, while a halt contains platforms and shelters, nothing more.
5. Is station X to be tagged as a halt or a station, or is it abandoned?
- The full list of Belgian stations and halts can be found here. To check whether it has to be tagged as a station or a halt, look at the properties by entering it here: if it is not manned (never), then log it as a halt. Even if there is a station building, if it is NOT accessible (always closed), then tag it as a railway=halt. The tag railway=station is reserved for buildings that are sometimes manned by personnel selling tickets and/or are accessible as waiting rooms. By the way, any "stations" that you know and are not in the list, are not served by NMBS. If you add it as a node, then a special extra tag should be used to clarify that this "station" is not served. Example: Mortsel-Liersesteenweg.
List of the principal railway lines in Belgium
This list needs some more cleanup.
Like the motorways, I propose to use the ref= tag for line numbers
