River networks with Tributaries
Rivers tend to be very long ways. Rivers are complex: they may include riverbanks, isles, branches and old riverbeds.
If you would have to describe the basin system you would probably like to work with relations being children of a mother relation...
Example
- Svapa River is a tributary of
- Seym River, which is a tributary of
- Desna River, which is a tributary of
- Dnieper.

Watersheds/River basins
A tag type=watershed got introduced to be able to describe a basin/watershed system of a river. Just adding child relations of tributaries to a parent relation does not get renderered/is not yet implemented/will never be implemented. For now one has to add all single waterway=river of a every single river to a parent river's watershed.
To also add areas (waterway=riverbank or natural=water) to the watershed-relation is not recommended - it would mean unnecessary overhead if there is already the waterway=river tag present in the relation.
Example:
- Lena River watershed:
166216 (XML, check, manage, JOSM, history, view, gpx ) with over 600 single waterway=river ways.
