*If you need help understanding the terms Node/Linear/Area, see [[Data Primitives]].<BR> |
|||
*If you don't see an appropriate tag for what you'd like to map, see [[Proposed features]]. From there you can see what features may be added (and maybe get them in sooner), or propose your own.<BR> |
|||
*To propose a new icon, use the page of the [[Proposed Icons]].<BR> |

| [[cycleway]] || opposite|| segment/way|| just permitted to cycle in the opposite way (one way street except for cycles). Note - such streets are common in the Netherlands and Denmark, for example, but do not exist anywhere in the UK: where it looks like they do, actually the street is two-way as normal for its whole length except for the very short section past the no-entry sign at the end, where cycles are excepted from the no-entry by means of a short lane separated by an island. This is called a "cycle plug". In some places this has been represented as a tiny segment of one way street at the end with an adjacent cycleway, forming a little triangle with the road they join to. |

Template:Language-Map Features
It is entirely intentional that OpenStreetMap does not have any content restrictions on the "Keys" and "Values" that are assigned to Nodes, Line Segments, Ways or Areas. However, there is benefit in editors of map content agreeing a core set of features together with corresponding keys and values in order that generic client software can interpret and display a common basemap, or at least part of the common basemap set. This page is dedicated to a core basemap feature set.
The content draws from the ramblings on the Labels page. It is not intended to be a complete list and you are encouraged to add any new relevant features to the proposed features page for discussion and consideration.
The content below is directed primarily at the English language. It could be extended for local and non-English requirements, although it is suggested that this be done on additional pages to keep the content readable.
- If you need help understanding the terms Node/Linear/Area, see Data Primitives.
- If you don't see an appropriate tag for what you'd like to map, see Proposed features. From there you can see what features may be added (and maybe get them in sooner), or propose your own.
- To propose a new icon, use the page of the Proposed Icons.
- See also Editing Standards and Conventions.
Only one key per element (node, segment, way, area) is allowed.
The lines of tables are sorted according to 1. relevanz, 2. theme, 3. alphanumerical order.
Physical
Highway
| Key | Value | Element | Comment | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| highway | motorway | segment/way | A restricted access major divided highway, normally with 2 or more running lanes plus emergency hard shoulder. Equivalent to the Freeway, Autobahn etc.. |
|
| highway | motorway_link | segment/way | The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a motorway. Normally with the same motorway restrictions. .. |
|
| highway | trunk | segment/way | Important roads that aren't motorways. Typically maintained by central, not local government. Need not necessarily be a divided highway. In the UK, many 2digit "A" roads (eg A34) were formally designated Trunk roads although that definition is no longer absolute... |
|
| highway | trunk_link | segment/way | The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a trunk road. .. |
|
| highway | primary | segment/way | Administrative classification in the UK, generally linking larger towns. |
|
| highway | primary_link | segment/way | The link roads (sliproads / ramps) leading to and from a primary road. | |
| highway | secondary | segment/way | Administrative classification in the UK, generally linking smaller towns and villages |
|
| highway | tertiary | segment/way | A "C" road in the UK. Generally for use on roads wider than 4 metres (13') in width, and for faster/wider minor roads that aren't A or B roads. In the UK, they tend to have dashed lines down the middle, whereas unclassified roads don't. |
|
| highway | unclassified | segment/way | No administrative classification. Unclassified roads typically form the lowest form of the interconnecting grid network. Note: This is not a marker for roads where we still need to choose a highway tag. |
|
| highway | track | segment/way | unpaved/unsealed roads for agricultural use; gravel roads in the forest etc. |
|
| highway | residential | segment/way | roads accessing or around residential areas but which are not a classified or unclassified highway. |
|
| highway | service | segment/way | generally for access to a building, motorway service station, beach, campsite, industrial estate, business park, etc. This is also commonly used for access to parking and trash collection. Sometimes called an alley, particularly in the US. |
|
| highway | bridleway | segment/way | For horses, (in the UK, generally footpaths on which horses are also permitted) |
|
| highway | cycleway | segment/way | For designated cycleways, i.e. mainly/exclusively for bicycles. If pedestrians are allowed as well, you can indicate this by adding a foot=yes tag. Note: names are not rendered currently. | |
| highway | footway | segment/way | For designated footpaths, i.e. mainly/exclusively for pedestrians. This includes walking tracks and gravel paths. If bicycles are allowed as well, you can indicate this by adding a bicycle=yes tag. Note: names are not rendered currently. |
|
| highway | pedestrian | segment/way | For Roads , i.e. mainly/exclusively for pedestrians /Shopping Areas | |
| highway | steps | segment/way | For flights of steps on footways |
|
| highway | mini_roundabout | node |
| |
| highway | stop | node | ||
| highway | traffic_signals | node | ||
| highway | crossing | node | ||
| highway | gate | node | ||
| highway | stile | node | Allow pedestrians to cross a wall or fence | |
| highway | cattle_grid | node | Bars in the road surface that allow wheeled vehicles but not animals to cross. Sometimes known as a Texas Gate, even outside of Texas | |
| highway | toll_booth | node | A road usage toll or fee is collected here | |
| highway | incline | node | A slope or hill, may encounter slow moving trucks | |
| highway | incline_steep | node | ||
| highway | node | Do not use this! Use bridge=yes, combined with layer=..., as a way attribute. See Mapping/Features/Bridge. Instead set the highway to the highway type that is going over the bridge. | ||
| highway | viaduct | node | A high and/or long bridge (more commonly carries water or trains) | |
| highway | motorway_junction | node | Indicates a junction (UK) or exit (US) ref should be set to the exit number or junction identifier. | |
| highway | services | node | ||
| highway | ford | node | The road crosses a stream or river, vehicles must enter the water node | |
| highway | bus_stop | node | ||
| highway | User Defined | node/ segment/way |
||
| junction | roundabout | segment/way | This automatically implies oneway=yes, the oneway direction is defined by the segment direction. This applies on a way, tagged with highway=<something> already | |

Cycleway
| Key | Value | Element | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| cycleway | lane | segment/way | A lane is a route that lies within the roadway |
| cycleway | track | segment/way | A track is a route that is separate from the road. |
| cycleway | opposite_lane | segment/way | lane in the opposite way (a "contraflow" lane) |
| cycleway | opposite_track | segment/way | track in the opposite way (that is, separate from the road) |
| cycleway | opposite | segment/way | just permitted to cycle in the opposite way (one way street except for cycles). In some places this has been represented as a tiny segment of one way street at the end with an adjacent cycleway, forming a little triangle with the road they join to. |
| cycleway | User Defined | segment/way |

| tracktype | grade3 | segment/way | unpaved track; A mixture of hard materials and soft. Quite compact |
| tracktype | grade4 | segment/way | unpaved track; tire marks, with plant growth in between. Mostly dirt, but some hard materials, or very compressed materials mixed in. |
| tracktype | grade5 | segment/way | unpaved track; subtle tire marks, lack of hardcore, Soft with low grip, subtle on the landscape. |
