Pistes
This proposal is for a whole set of tags that are required to describe piste maps.
Last winter (2005/6) some experiments were performed to record tracks and tag piste maps. This proposal builds on that expeience but takes into account the development of additional techniques (such as areas) that have been developed since then.
Tag prefix
Piste map specific tags will be prefixed with opm: (Open Piste Map) to avoid potential conflicts with similar tags used in other contexts (eg capacity, speed, classification).
Areas
- landuse=winter_sports
- name=name of resort or ski area (eg Espace Killy)
- natural=glacier to define the extent of a glacier
Aerialway
This is currently part of map features:
- aerialway=cable_car|chair_lift|drag_lift
- the segment between each station at which a person may join or depart should be defined as a single way.
- segments should be drawn in the upwards direction, ie from the lower lift station to the upper lift station
Additional values are:
- aerialway=bubble_lift|button_lift|t-bar
- aerialway=tramway big gondolas
- aerialway=gondola small gondolas
- nodes along the path of the aerialway should be tagged with:
- man_made=tower (this tag could apply to anything from an electricity pylon to the Post Office Tower, do we need a more specific categorisation).
Additional piste map specific tags for aerialways:
- opm:occupancy - number of people in each car, chair, etc (opm:capacity=1 implied for button_lift and opm:capacity=2 implied for t-bar)
- opm:capacity - number of people per hour
- opm:speed - average speed of lift in m/second? or km/hour? (in practice this is difficult to measure so will be quite a rare tag)
- opm:duration - average/typical time for journey on lift from one station to the next (this is more useful than the speed or capacity and can easily be measured from GPS tracklogs or waypoints)
Railways
railway=funicular for funiculars
Lift Stations
Each aerialway should have a node representing lift stations at the start and end of the way. There may also be stations along the way.
- opm:lift_station=start|intermediate|end
Additional tags for lift stations:
- opm:altitude=in metres (this is often marked on a sign at the lift station and is a very important piece of data)
- opm:name=name of station (if it has one)
- opm:line_duration = average queueing time (may not be easy to get this and may depend on season and time of day)
Pistes
A piste may be a route through a variety of different terrains. It might be a meadow or a mountain road or part of a glacier. Pistes may be defined as ways or as areas:
| Key | Value | Element | Comment | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| landuse | opm:snow_park | a funpark with rails, quarter pipes .. | ||
| landuse | opm:ski_area | the whole area | ||
| landuse | opm:piste | a piste, left border drawn in driving direction | ||
| opm:pist_type | nordic |
Additional tags for pistes:
- opm:difficulty=
| US/Canadian | Europe | tag value |
|---|---|---|
| green circle | blue | beginner |
| blue square | red | intermediate |
| double blue square | intermediate | |
| black square | black | advanced |
| double black square | expert | |
| yellow | freeride |
Other
- ski school
- ticket office
- mountain restaurant
- viewpoint
- mountain rescue
- mountain hut/refuge
- bobsled track
