Belém is a municipality in Pará, Brasil at latitude 1°27′02.16″ South, longitude 48°28′05.52″ West.

Belém is the capital of the Brazilian state of Pará. The Belém district extends between the Guamá river in the south and Oteiro and Mosqueiro Islands in the north. The metropolitan area includes the districts of Ananindeua and Marituba. The city extends across the district bordes without any visible, “natural” division.

Yahoo images exist for the metropolitan area of Belém. Most streets of Belém district recognizable in Yahoo imagery are already in OSM. However, ground truthed data are scarce. It is necessary, among other things, to

  • add street names
  • check and add small streets and lanes, and
  • update the map where the roads have changed recently; in Yahoo images, for example, the continuation of Avenida João Paulo II (antiga 1º de Dezembro) towards the “entroncamento” is not yet visible.

In addition, one-way streets and private roads (e.g., condominium complexes) cannot be identified easily via remote sensing. We need help from Belém locals!
