TIGER Cleanup

Review for existence, name, and geometry is ongoing. Primary sources for this are street-level imagery and the parish's published GIS data. See TIGERMap [1] for current status.

• Many TIGER-imported highways are named "State route nnn". This is typically not the local name for these, which is usually "Highway nnn." These are typically only signed with the state route signs outside of cities.

Waterways and Lakes

• Upper Calcasieu River area multipolygon and river route imported from NHD and need fixing.
• Named minor rivers such as Bayou d'Inde and Bayou Choupique may or may not be fully mapped.
• Named streams and gullies and such are spottily mapped
• Unnamed ditches and streams are rarely mapped
• All three named lakes (Lake Charles, Prien Lake, and Moss Lake) are reasonably-well outlined.

Landcover

• Reasonably well-described around Sulphur and Choupique
• Little progress elsewhere

Data sources

• The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury GIS website has datasets for streets, addresses, and city limits in "open, free and reusable formats." No license is given for the data, so it cannot be imported. See the discussion on the forum.
• As of April 2026, Bing imagery is from November 2022, and ESRI is from November 2025. If using Bing, check ESRI before uploading changes.
