Map Styles on OpenStreetMap.org

Who should make the decision about which map styles should be available, or shown as the default, on openstreetmap.org?

Candidates: Roland Olbricht | Brazil Singh | Daniela Waltersdorfer | Md Atikuzzaman Limon

Roland Olbricht - Q08 Map Styles on OpenStreetMap.org

The Operations team implements the decision, and these are determined by objective criteria. The board shall not intervene there, as the Foundation shall have strong working groups.

Brazil Singh - Q08 Map Styles on OpenStreetMap.org

I think there is no single person or committee that holds the authority to decide the map style to be shown on osm.org website. The website developers who maintain the code for openstreetmap.org, and the server administrators who manage the hardware must ensure any new map style is practical to host. But it should be implemented after community discussion/reviews.

Daniela Waltersdorfer - Q08 Map Styles on OpenStreetMap.org

Please work with the many Working Groups, including Data, Legal, Operations.

Md Atikuzzaman Limon - Q08 Map Styles on OpenStreetMap.org

Decisions about map styles on openstreetmap.org, such as the default OpenStreetMap Carto, should be made collaboratively by the OSMF Board, Data Working Group, and community. A transparent process, including community consultations via the OSM wiki or forums, and clear criteria (e.g., accessibility, usability, and alignment with OSM’s principles) ensures styles meet user needs. The community’s question about demoting styles for unreasonable tag rendering underscores the need for a formal review mechanism.
