exclamation mark

This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: crossing:markings=*.
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

crossing:marking=* is used to specify properties about the type of road marks on the crossing itself.

This key was depricated via the vote approving crossing:markings=*. It is reccomended to use crossing:markings=* to tag the pedestrian crossing markings, and surface=* and surface:colour=* to tag information about the surface of the crossing.

How to map

The crossing:marking=* key can be used on a pedestrian crossing node highway=crossing (or alternatively on a pedestrian crossing way highway=footway + footway=crossing).

Examples

crossing:marking=rainbow

Zebra crossing with additional rainbow colours between the white stripes
