In OpenHistoricalMap, the network key indicates the route network to which a route relation belongs. A route network is a coordinated system of routes with a common identity. Typically, the routes in a highway or public transport network follow a consistent numbering scheme, or they are marked by similar signs or other branding.

The following tables describe the network tags that differ between OpenStreetMap and OpenHistoricalMap. For tags that remain the same, see Key:network. All grey rows represent internal route numberings.

Use the same network=* value as OSM if OSM already has a value for it. Also set network:wikidata=* to the QID of the Wikidata item describing the network. You can look up the QID by network=* based on metadata stored in Wikidata or OHM.

Software support

The OpenHistoricalMap vector tile schema exposes network=* (along with ref=* and other details) of a route relation as part of roadways and pathways so that stylesheets can label roads and paths based on named or numbered routes.

OpenHistoricalMap Americana marks routes on the map, choosing the marker design based on network=*. It supports both OSM and OHM network values. Additionally, it supports network:wikidata=* for a number of networks.
