Fasanenstraße Spaceshift Berlin
We at FixMyCity (FMC) are want to begin a mapping initiative in Fasanenstraße and nearby areas to find new spots for street trees. Using parking and street data from OpenStreetMap, we’ll identify potential locations and display them in a detailed street map. This map will not only highlight where trees could go but also show temporary greening efforts from the "Berlinettes" project (a separate initiative by Team Berlinette at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg).
Why are we doing this? Berlin really needs more trees—about 250,000 are currently missing citywide, including around 12,750 just in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Our goal is to use data to give the city a better basis for deciding where to plant trees and prioritizing those locations.
This project is part of the "100m Zukunft" competition by the Berlin Chamber of Commerce (IHK Berlin).
Rationale
Our goal is to show transformation potential for paved surfaces in a dense urban setting. We will create a public accessible website which shows a map based on OSM-Data. Example of how this map could look like: Straßenraumkarte Neukölln by Supaplex030
Community Consultation
We contacted the community using the following communication channels:
- Announcements took place via the Berlin OSM Matrix Channel and via the local Mailinglist.
Hashtag
The editors are asked to use the hashtag #SpaceShiftFasanenstraße on all changesets.
Scope
- Very detailed in the area of Fasanenstraße between Hardenbergstraße and Kantstraße and it's two surrounding blocks.
- Less detailed in a 10 minute by foot isochrone (calculated by Vahalla) around IHK Berlin in Fasanenstraße. This area should reach to Straße des 17. Juni in the north, Breitscheidplatz in the east, Kurfürstendamm in the south and Savignyplatz in the west.
Tagging
We will make use of a broad bandwidth of tags and values to represent the area of our interest in a highly detailed way. Our goal is to create a street-space-map which shows paved and unpaved surfaces and more. We'll for example use these keys/schemas and some more:
- area:highway=* and kerbs for the street and it's sidewalks.
- pedestrian, cyclist and motorcar infrastructure. (sidewalks, crossings,...)
- surface=*
- on-street-parking (lane, street_side,...) and off-street-parking (surface parking lots or underground parking)
- street furniture (trees, tree_pits, street_lamps, bicycle_parking, advertisement columns, street cabinets, bollards and so on...)
- we will fix broken or outdated geometries and tags.
Tools and Data Sources
Open Data Sources
We use the official geodata from the Berlin city administration which was made public. You can find the licensing permission for OpenStreetMap at this document.
Private Data Sources
- infra3D Viewer (Street side photos from the city. We got permission to use this data.) - Mapillary
Tools
We use JOSM for editing.
Contact & Participants
First, please contact the individual mapper or use the changeset discussion. If no conciliation was successful, please contact the coordinator at FixMyCity:

Editors
Every OSM editor has their person-specific account. They do not use their private account, but a company related account.
- fmc_Mlvln (on OSM · edits · contribs · heatmap · comments)

- fmc_Supaplex030 (on OSM · edits · contribs · heatmap · comments)

Every user will have a short description about the project and contact possibilities on their user profile.
Measuring our Success and Performance
The project's goal is to transform public data and our survey results into OSM data. The resulting dataset should have the a high level of quality, comparable with other micro mapped areas (e.g. Neukölln).
Training/Instructions
The hired persons are skilled in OSM and active to highly active OpenStreetMap editors.
Beyond that, FixMyCity provides training and support.
Timeframe
The project starts in May 2026 and is planned to be finished in July-August 2026.
