Proposal
Tag them all over the railroad where have direction name
Rationale
Some railway name with it's direction for construction and other use.
Eg Apple Line Upline, Orange Line Inbound, Orange Relief Line, Seventh Avenue Line Fast Tracks
This is unsuitable use in either
namefor the name w/ direction is specialize within railway industrial, average user might not want to see them. Also make easier for bot and search engines. or- railway:track_ref=* for it is used also between station or
- ref=* : this is not it.
Also sometime it might call Lemon 3rd Line, so writing only Upline in the value is not suitable.
Btw no idea what key should it call, I am idiot on naming things, you might want to have fancier name.
