Rationale

This proposal tries to make a first step in recognizing a common ground in marine tagging between OSM and OpenSeaMap tackling a small topic. From the Tag:landuse=harbour page: "The land areas serving a port or harbour should more properly have landuse=* tag values with their specific usage (port_terminal, ferry_terminal, container_terminal, shipyard, wharf, quay, etc.)."

Instead of using many values for the landuse key (or the common tagging for the rendering of landuse=industrial), the proposal recommends the only value port alongside more specific keys.

Updated 07/07/14 with more precise defintion.

Difference between harbour and port

Harbour: A natural or artificially improved body of water providing protection for vessels, and generally anchorage and docking facilities.

Port: A place provided with terminal and transfer facilities for loading and discharging cargo or passengers, usually located in a harbour.

landuse=harbour should be used to enclose the harbour area, landuse=port instead should be used to map in detail each facility.

Tagging

landuse=port on the area, defining the category port=* and eventually the handled cargo cargo=*. To describe the location use port:type=*.

Inspiration from the IHO Definition (latest doc file) and are similar to seamark:harbour:category

Port categories

CATHAC category value Definition Usage
Cargo terminal A terminal for handling cargo (See cargo=*). port=cargo
RoRo-terminal roro A terminal for roll-on roll-off ferries. port=roro
Seaplane terminal seaplane A terminal for seaplanes. port=seaplane
Fishing harbour fishing A harbour with facilities for fishing boats. port=fishing
Naval base naval A centre of operations for naval vessels. Naval_base
Ferry terminal ferry A terminal for passenger and vehicle ferries. Tag:amenity=ferry_terminal
Passenger terminal passenger A terminal for the loading and unloading of passengers. Tag:amenity=ferry_terminal

Cargo extension

CATHAC category value Definition Usage
Tanker terminal tanker A terminal for the bulk handling of liquid cargoes. cargo=liquid_bulk
Container terminal container A terminal for container ships. cargo=container
Bulk terminal bulk A terminal for the handling of bulk materials such as iron ore, coal, etc. cargo=dry_bulk
General cargo terminal cargo A terminal for handling general cargo. cargo=general

port:type

To distinguish different port types.

Value Description
seaport "Normal" port (implicit)
dryport Inland port directly connected to a seaport, where can be performed customs operations
deep_water The water depth can allow berthing of bigger vessels
inland_port On river or lakes

Multiple values handling

If you need to assign multiple values, consider modifying the tags as the following example: cargo=container;general becomes cargo:container=yes + cargo:general=yes

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. but strongley suggest to clarify the chapitre "Difference between harbour and port" to be compatible with landuse=harbour and explaining that port is adminstrative area and should contain all harbours and port facilities in this port --Nounours77 (talk) 11:45, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, it's unclear that part, I should edit... It's a link to the existing tag https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Naval_base --Sarchittuorg (talk) 09:57, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. -- It should be clear how this affect existing use of other transport-related land use tags (harbour, railway, highway, etc). I do not disagree in the purpose per si. --Skippern (talk) 00:00, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
It could be dealt in a section if you want... :-) It could be drawn a sketch for example --Sarchittuorg (talk) 09:41, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
This should have been dealt with before the vote --Skippern (talk) 19:03, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
