Key:bicycle_road

Move Key:bicycle_road to Tag:bicycle_road=yes. This is a one-value key, see talkpage and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:bicycle_road%3Dyes&action=history The same with DE:Key:bicycle_road, DE:Tag:bicycle_road=yes and RU:Key:bicycle_road, RU:Tag:bicycle_road=yes. maro21 13:37, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

@Maro21: For a key that has one predominant value, are there any downsides to redirecting the key to the tag value as you're proposing? For example, would it keep iD from being able to associate a preset field with the tag description via taginfo? I see you've previously made a similar move for noname=yes, but other entries like oneway=yes and motorroad=yes are still documented as keys. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 01:47, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
- Page Key:bicycle_road describes the tag bicycle_road=yes, so I wanted to move it to keep the authors and the history (without changing anything in the text).
- Key:bicycle_road can be a redirect, a soft redirect or even a separate page.
- Unfortunately after moving the page we need to create and update data items.
- The current situation is that if you enter the tag "bicycle_road=no" (or any other value) in the iD editor and click the "i" icon, the description that is currently in the table appears, i.e. that it is a bicycle road.
- Thank you for finding motorroad=yes, it should be moved too :)
- The other things listed here won't have to be done by admins, only moving :) maro21 19:13, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Lang pages

Please create:
MediaWiki:Lang ...

This request has been waiting since 2012: MediaWiki talk:Lang.

@Maro21:? Is it a good idea? Verdy p was famous for making or requesting many things of problematic value and ended being blocked for that. Is it one of their bad or good ideas? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:48, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Hehe:) I'm not asking for it because someone asked. We (I and Chris2map, but also others) need it to detect user's interface language which would help some templates to display text in a user's language, not page language. All details you have in linked discussions. As an example: Template:Bs:Map Features:abutters - do we want {delete} template to display text in Bosnian because Bosnian page was nominated to deletion? maro21 21:36, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
@Maro21: If a message needs to display in the user's preferred language instead of the page language ({{PAGELANGUAGE}}), that would be a good argument for moving that message itself to the MediaWiki: namespace. That way, we can take advantage of MediaWiki's built-in language fallback capability. Alternatively, if showing translations in {{Delete}} is a problem, we could just make the template unlocalizable and hard-code it in English. Abusing interface messages for template content creates problems for VisualEditor, but the problem can be confined to certain templates that are unlikely to be edited that way. Making the language code more reusable via MediaWiki:Lang would open the door to unforeseen editing bugs. This is part of the reason an interface language magic word was declined. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 02:03, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
> that would be a good argument for moving that message itself to the MediaWiki: namespace
But Mediawiki namespace can be edited only by admins, while templates can be edited by anyone. I haven't thought yet about whether the {delete} template, and others like it, should be localizable and accessible to the end user, or only in English.
> we could just make the template unlocalizable and hard-code it in English
This would also be a good solution. Unless we want to make the interface more accessible to non-English speakers, but editing here - however there aren't many of those people. But what about other templates of this type? maro21 19:20, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

By the way, Wikimedia Commons takes the approach of localized templates that match the interface language but link to versions in other languages. This table outlines the main advantages and drawbacks of five different template localization systems in use on that wiki. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:03, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

You see, even Wikimedia Commons is using this method with MediaWiki:Lang :). maro21 19:55, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Mobile.css is missing "mbox"

Could you please copy "mbox" CSS style definitions from Common.css to Mobile.css so that message boxes (e.g. imboxes on file pages) are shown with border in mobile view, too?

See: MediaWiki_talk:Mobile.css#Styles for mboxes (like ambox, imbox, fmbox, ombox) are missing. --Chris2map (talk) 15:02, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

French translation of Template:Taginfo2

Hi, could you please create the pages?

The RedBurn (talk) 07:14, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

@Minh Nguyen: Could you please either handle this request or change the template so the user can add the translation themselves? --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 14:48, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

@The RedBurn and Tigerfell: Thanks, I've added all the translations. I took the liberty of substituting the English-style quotation marks with the ones from MediaWiki:Quotation-marks/fr.

It isn't possible to unprotect messages in the MediaWiki namespace so that non-administrators can edit them. However, once the Translate extension is installed, we can enable it for these messages, which would open it up to every user.

Unprotect Namespace

I'd like to edit Namespace but the page has been protected in December of 2020 to stop an edit war. --Push-f (talk) 05:53, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Delete pages to make room for page moves

The pages blocking the moves either don't have content or just duplicate the other pages, so they can just be deleted to make room for the moves.

--Push-f (talk) 09:46, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

You can set the language in the page properties. Do you need anything more? --Andrew (talk) 12:02, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
Yes I have a script that parses the page language from the title and I don't want to complicate it to deal with the content language property when that property is 99% set to English for non-English pages. --Push-f (talk) 12:43, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

Proposal followups

Proposal:Documentation of key prefixes & suffixes has been approved, so please:

  • create a Property for "permanent key prefix ID"
  • create a Property for "permanent key suffix ID"
  • move Key:addr to Key:addr:* (I cannot because the page already exists)
  • move Key:abandoned: to Key:abandoned:* (I cannot because the page already exists)

Thanks! --Push-f (talk) 07:12, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
