In the October 2018 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the president of the church, gave an address strongly discouraging usage of any term other than the official name of the church. The style guide has been updated accordingly. Since members of the church consider Russel M. Nelson, M.D., as not only the chief executive officer of their denomination, but also as a living prophet, his statement must be considered as definitive. Earlier suggestions that the terms "mormon" or "LDS" be used for the sake of brevity should be considered as obsolete and the use of those labels deprecated.
This tag is one of several suggested for tagging churches belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The tag can be ambiguous as the term "mormon" is used colloquially to refer to any church or group within the .such as the Community of Christ. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discourages the use of the term to refer to the church itself or any of the splinter groups
