The tag leisure=indoor_play has been proposed, but not agreed on, to tag an indoor play areas designed for pre-teen children.

They come in a wide range of forms, from small areas in shopping centres to large warehouse style buildings with ample parking which have a wide catchment area. They differ from outdoor playgrounds in a number of important points: constant supervision by staff, usually commercial, different type of equipment, and located inside of a building. Often there are separate areas for different ages of children. There may be a cafe and seating area for the parents.

Historically, they may have originated from soft play: rubberised foam mats and other components which allow boisterous play by pre-school children indoors, but larger locations will offer a wider range of play types, such as inflatable play (bouncy castles), climbing frames and even indoor versions of traditional playground equipment. Many restrict the type of clothing (no outdoor shoes), food and age of children to ensure safety. Many provide event hosting, such as children's birthday parties.

Note that the tag leisure=playground is more commonly used for all type of playgrounds.

How to map

Create a node (within an area mapped as a building=*) and add the tag leisure=indoor_play. If the indoor play area takes up the entire building or a clearly defined area within the building, it may be mapped as an area instead.

Additional tags

  • name=* - the name of the indoor play area
  • operator=* - the name of the company or business which operates the facility
  • opening_hours=* - the hours of operation
  • fee=yes/no/amount - for specifying if the indoor play centre charges a fee for access

Proposed tags for indoor play centres:

  • indoor_play=* with an appropriate value, such as indoor_play=soft_play, to specify the type of indoor play area.
  • padded_climbing_frame=yes/no - for indoor play centres that have a large padded climbing frame area.
  • toddler_area=no/dedicated/shared - for indoor play centres that include areas specifically designed for smaller children.

Individual pieces of play equipment should be tagged with the established Key:playground.

Distinction from playground

The tag leisure=playground is the most similar. Playgrounds are normally unmanaged and outdoor, but the tag is also used for covered playground and indoor playground (e.g. in malls).

Indoor play centres are run as a business, with an entry fee and staff often also with a cafe for parents.
