Common land (a common) is land which has an owner, but over which other people have certain rights. Historically these rights typically included the right to graze livestock, collect firewood, or cut turf. Today they include the rights to use the land for certain leisure activities.
This tag has moved into broader use to indicate publicly-accessible land worldwide. It is no longer rendered by the default OSM Carto style. Consider using leisure=park for larger areas of publicly-accessible land within cities, and the appropriate landuse=* tag for how the land is actually used outside cities.
Land which is legally designated as common land in the UK should be tagged as designation=common
Problems with this tag
- The tag defines a legal ownership concept, not a physical concept.
- The tag is very UK centric. Commons are a UK concept that does not really translate to other countries and is often misunderstood.
- The tag is heavily misused. At least in Western Europe, almost all objects tagged with leisure=common are not actually commons. The tag is often used for random pieces of public grass, such as those alongside roads. It was in large part an incorrect tagging for the renderer.
- Other more specific tags are available. leisure=park, landuse=grass, leisure=recreation_ground, leisure=pitch, landuse=farmland or other tags for a physical features, designation=common for a legal status
