Use mri=yes, ultrasound=yes instead when added to a feature

The current proposal recommends using healthcare:equipment= with the values ultrasound, mri, dialysis, laboratory, imaging_equipment and so on.

However, many hospitals have an MRI, ultrasound, laboratory, x-ray and so on. While this could be tagged as "healthcare:equipment=mri;ultrasound;dialysis;laboratory;etc", it would be much easier to use mri=yes, ultrasound=yes, dialysis=yes, laboratory=yes, ct_scan=no - this also allows using the value "no" to specify the lack of an mri or ultrasound on a facility like an amenity=hospital in a big developed city, where the "default" expected value would be "yes" normally.

It's also easier for mappers to think about each feature one at a time. In medical school they taught us that you can't ask a patient: "Have you had fever, cough, diarrhea, constipation, pallipitations or chest pain?" - they will only remember the last one or two in the list. Ask one thing at a time. --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:45, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

operating_theater, laboratory, intensive_care_unit, emergency_department are not equipment

Some of the suggested values are not types of equipment.

I would recommend tagging these either as seperate features with healthcare=laboratory for example, or if added to the same feature as amenity=hospital, then use tags like operating_theater=yes, intensive_care_unit=yes - this is simpler for other mappers to check than a long list of semicolon-separated values, and none of these are "equipment" like an ultrasound or MRI device.

(Also note that laboratory is already mapped 2742 times as a separate feature with healthcare=laboratory and healthcare=dialysis is used 81 times in this way, but I agree that we should still have tags to add to features like hospitals to show that the hospital offers a lab or dialysis) --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:45, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

Add CT_scan, X-ray

Rather than "imaging_equipment" please suggest using "x-ray" and "ct_scan" in addition to the already suggested "ultrasound" and "mri". As mentioned above, it's best if these are tags like "ct_scan=yes/no" when added to an amenity=hospital feature, but they could also be mapped with a separate node at the center of the feature with healthcare=x-ray or amenity=x-ray. --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:45, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

Key healthcare instead of healthcare:equipment to map as separate feature

I think there should be the option to map some of these with a separate node, using healthcare= or amenity=, for example amenity=mri or healthcare=mri, when the mri is in a separate building on one side of the hospital, or even a stand-alone mri in a medical office. Of course some of the features, like an ultrasound, are devices on casters than can move around the hospital, so this shouldn't be mapped as a separate feature normally. While you could use "healthcare:equipment" for this, it will make it take much longer for existing database users to support the new tags: new keys require reloading the rendering database, which is a huge pain when you are rendering the whole planet, and there's no reason to create a new key when an existing one is shorter and perfectly clear. --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:45, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
