home made or industrial?

I suggest to use subtagging to differentiate between home made ice cream and industrial one. This could be done with the ice_cream-tag: ice_cream=industrial, ice_cream=artisanal and could be used for amenity=cafe as well as for other ways of tagging ice cream parlors. -- Dieterdreist 15:15, 1 September 2010 (BST)

Amenity or shop?

Why is this an amenity? This is clearly a shop! --Pbb (talk) 21:29, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Yeah nowadays it would definitely be added under the shop key. Just legacy reasons. I think it's a very old tag (documented in Map Features a lot longer than the age of this page... since the early days I think) -- Harry Wood (talk) 14:34, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
This seems much closer to a restaurant or a cafe than your typical shops. --AndiG88 (talk) 12:52, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
only if cafe and restaurant are reclassified as shops too. - pmailkeey 2015:5:14

Comment from main page

EITHER amenity=fast_food, amenity=cafe, amenity=ice_cream

OR shop=fast_food, shop=cafe, shop=ice_cream

But not a mixture PLEASE - for consistency's sake.

Regarding your deletion of cuisine=ice_cream + amenity=...

Jeisenbe, I don't agree with your deletion in your edit where you give the following reasoning.

Remove "An alternative approach for tagging the same thing would be to tag it with cuisine=ice_cream, together with amenity=fast_food or amenity=cafe. " - this is not common.)

However, according to TagInfo, cuisine=ice_cream is pretty much widespread, up to 12K occurrences. So documenting it would be warranted. -Bkil (talk) 10:55, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Certainly cuisine=ice_cream should be documented at Tag:cuisine=ice_cream and I would recommend creating that page: it is already mentioned on Key:cuisine. However that tag has been used over 3000 times with amenity=ice_cream, as well as with amenity=cafe and amenity=fast_food ([taginfo https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=cuisine%3Dice_cream]), so amenity=ice_cream is several times more common. --Jeisenbe (talk) 20:57, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
It's pretty clear that cuisine=ice_cream is implied by amenity=ice_cream and thus redundant in this case. It is useful for other amenities (e.g., cafes) where the ice is not the main product. This complicates life for data users slightly but it is still favorable IMHO. --Stefanct (talk) 14:25, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
