Distinction among market, public_market and marketplace

In this thread you can see the distinction among them.

Numbered stalls in a market

Marketplaces contain many stalls, often permanently numbered, each operated by a different seller. Please add a way of adding them. Jidanni (talk) 03:03, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

Named sections of a market

A market might be divided into Section A, Section B, just like airports. Give a way of tagging these areas. Jidanni (talk) 03:05, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

Street that becomes a daily market closed to traffic

Let's say every morning from 06:00 to 14:00 a three block long stretch of Main St. becomes totally filled with sellers occupying every inch of pavement.

At all other times it is just a regular Main St. with the usual car traffic.

How to tag? Jidanni (talk) 21:32, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

For the market, this can be detailed with
amenity=marketplace
opening_hours=Mo-Su,PH 06:00-14:00
(or the actual opening hours).
For the stretch of street with traffic closed, use Conditional restrictions such as:
highway=*
motor_vehicle=yes
motor_vehicle:conditional=no @ (Mo-Su,PH 06:00-14:00)

--Althio (talk) 06:57, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

Thanks. I started with this, but I suppose it doesn't actually get rendered on the map. Jidanni (talk) 07:44, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
It does get rendered on the map, with an icon and the area extent at high zoom. --Althio (talk) 08:25, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
I would add also note=* to explain the situation to other mappers Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:30, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Subsections

Let's say

  1. the north half of the marketplace is the "dry goods division"
  2. the south half of the marketplace is the "wet goods division"

or whatever totally different "worlds". How to map? It is all the same marketplace, under the same management, under the same giant roof. Jidanni (talk) 04:23, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

That's a good question! If there were different buildings with different names, I would consider using separate amenity=marketplace features, but if it's all one big marketplace with different sections for meat, vegetables, hardware and so on, then we need a new tag for each section. There isn't a standard way to design a tag like this yet, but when I proposed mapping camp pitches within a campground, most people voted for using tourism=camp_pitch inside of a tourism=camp_site feature. So I would suggest amenity=market_section or something similar, mapped within a single amenity=marketplace feature. --Jeisenbe (talk) 13:32, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Relation allowed ?

Hi, the page says no relation, though market place is sometime tagged as a relation and they are rendered on osm-carto style, see example here https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/10231438 Is there a good reason to forbid to use it as a relation ?--Florimondable (talk) 19:56, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

The object which is linked above, relation 10231438, is a multipolygon. These are considered to be a type of area, just like closed ways which are used to map areas. The attribute "onRelation = yes" is only used for other types of relations which are not areas, such as route relations. --Jeisenbe (talk) 11:49, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Bad Example

Hi, I just saw that the example for the amenity=marketplace is a marketplace called marché (french for market). However in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Names_are_not_for_descriptions it is clearly said that names should not be used as descriptions. Can anybody please put another example on the page or change the name to anything that is not just saying market (in any language) Best, Michael --Mfbehrens99 (talk) 13:51, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Excuse my ignorance of foreign languages: Looks like there's no special name for the market (according to search results), so the "Marché" way 82571758 may have been intended as under Diar El Afia way 82571750. ---- Kovposch (talk) 16:40, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
If market has no name then name=* should not be used and noname=yes applied Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:15, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Was thinking whether it is a proper name like Marché Diar El Afia (is this grammatically correct?), which needs further investigation. ---- Kovposch (talk) 13:23, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Solved in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:amenity%3Dmarketplace&curid=32303&diff=2075023&oldid=1970701 Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:15, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

How to add a marketplace which has the same area as another feature, say a parking lot

I would like to add marketplaces which typically (in Belgium) take the place of parking lots on a given day. It seems wrong to draw the same area again, and I can only have one amenity per feature. How should I proceed? --Trougnouf (talk) 19:07, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

edit: I've added it drawing over the same area: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1074598763 . I will wait for a review before I tackle more markets. --Trougnouf (talk) 19:19, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Is it possible that marketplace is a bit larger than parking and includes also footways? It would allow to map a bit different areas and make things easier to edit AND more accurate @Trougnouf: Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 22:29, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
I don't know, I have not yet gone to this marketplace, but it is pretty common in Belgian towns for a town square to be used as a parking lot most of the time and a market once a week. In those cases there seems to be a perfect overlap (and no specific walkways within).
Another example I am more sure of (because I have been there) is the Philippeville market. I've added the square (which is not a parking lot, https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1074852290 ) and the marketplace ( https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1074852291 ) by drawing the same shape twice. Is that the correct/desired way? --Trougnouf (talk) 20:46, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
If shape is exactly the same, then it is correct but really annoying to edit Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:13, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
IMO, it makes no sense to tag an area as marketplace if there is another dominating usage (e.g. as parking lot).In this case I would tag the area as what it is in 95 % of time and prefer a node tagging.--Geo Dät (talk) 19:25, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Different types of markets

There are different types of markets: weekly & farmers' markets, organic market, flea & antique market, art and creative markets. So that these can be distinguished from each other, further keys can be used.

Park vs. Marketplace

Let's say there's this nice park that turns into a marketplace once a week, month, or even year.

Well I suppose both will render on the same area, so it's not so bad. (Hmm, only one fill color, and I suppose names if on the same spot will cause one to be zapped...)

Actually it is

and only in summer, and the rest of the week it is just

Well, for iD once areas overlap, it is very hard to go back and edit any but the top-most...

Hmm, I better combine the first two into one polygon... What a mess...

name=xxx;yyy
opening hours=qqq;rrr

Linear features (aka streets) not documented

In https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:amenity%3Dmarketplace&oldid=1515998 geozeisig removed the indication that this tag can be applied to ways, as far as I can tel, without any discussion. This would seem to extraordinary counter productive as modelling as a linear feature would actually be the appropriate way to map a street market and similar. If there is no massive disagreement I'll revert the change in a couple of days. SimonPoole (talk) 08:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

So you are talking in detail about this edit. Maybe the edit was based on current (or in 2017) distribution for closed and open way objects (open ways: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1HyP (current count 56) / closed ways: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1HyQ (current count 47774)). Seems we have app. 0.1% open ways. I looked for some open way examples, there cases where areas seems "defect", eg. way 221967791, way 463706151, way 1205243439; cases of duplicate tagging: way 143650678, area 1025761581; and cases you are talking about: way 167268012, way 542955946? --MalgiK (talk) 17:11, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
