Redundant info

I don't get the point of this tag. It's not common to see "attached" houses around here, so it wouldn't make sense for me to tag a house as building=detached. Isn't this kind of information easy to infer from the geometry of the house? i.e. if this house share nodes with a neighboring house, then it's attached, otherwise it's detached. --Jgpacker (talk) 19:17, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

I agree, this tag seems rather poorly defined. --Alan Trick (talk) 16:00, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

This tag should be deprecated. If there is a need to differentiate between "detached" houses and townhouses or rowhouses, it would make more sense to create a tag building=rowhouse or building=townhouse. A "house" is by definition detached, at least in the United States. Apm-wa (talk) 14:42, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

From my understanding: A building=house is any building that was constructed for the purpose of housing. It is a relativelly generic tag and very suitable for tagging residential buildings. A building=detached is a specialisation of building=house which implies it is a house, and does not contain multiple residences within.
It is possible for a building=house to be detached from other buildings, but for the building itself to contain multiple different residences (e.g. contain 2 semidetached houses together, or many terrace houses). With complete coverage of the map, we could be sure that a detached house contains only a single residence. Until then, tagging building=detached adds extra information that 'this building contains only 1 residence and does not need to be subdivided into smaller houses'. How would you tag a duplex, a triplex, and quadruplex? These are single structures with multiple dwellings, shared walls, but each dwelling has its own street address, unlike an apartment building. Apm-wa (talk) 14:02, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
Can you link photos? "triplex", "quadruplex" sounds like building=apartments to me (though in my part of world there would be no separate address for them) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 15:04, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

If it is a single building then it is a clear building=apartments (though, some very similar are actually multiple building=house set in a row). duplex is less clear to me Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:20, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
