Historicity?

Paper Map Symbols (christian)

The biggest problem with this tag is that "historic" is absolutely misleading. We need to distinguish chapels, crosses, religious picture trees (Marterl) to be able to match current printed maps. Many of them are not at all historic, and better described by a generic "place of worship" with a kind descriptor. It not only is misleading, you can consider it being offensive as it implies Christianity is historic. You simply can't do that. I also support putting it as a subcategory under amenity=place_of_worship. Ozjoghurt 20:22, 04 Sept 2013 (UTC)

Has this tag been voted for or otherwise approved or at least discussed somewhere? It currently reads "status = Approved". I also find it quite rude to generally categorize religious items as "historic". Nillerdk (talk) 13:58, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

From http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Historic: The historic=* key is used to identify features that are of historic interest. So if a given wayside cross itself is of historic interest you might consider using this tag. Or not. If you don't think it is, or don't want to generally categorize religious item as "historic" you can still use :

Now that I think of it... both place_of_worship and historic may be subject to discussion for any specific cross. I'd rather use man_made... --EddieJavelle (talk) 18:09, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your view, Eddie. I completely agree and I've now added a note about this in the tag-description. Nillerdk (talk) 19:00, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
I would say a cross is historic if it is depicted in a historic document such as a photo or a description of an area. Arlo James Barnes (talk) 00:51, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

A single cross vs. group of crosses and/or other artifacts

Currently the examples include a picture of two large crosses with some smaller shrine-like objects behind a fence (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Gor%C4%99dy_krzy%C5%BCe_13.07.2009_p.jpg). I'd argue that this shouldn't be tagged as a wayside cross but rather a wayside shrine because it is not a single cross but an ensemble and thus should be removed from here. --Stefanct (talk) 23:28, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

I would map it as 2 crosses and 2 shrines (or maybe 2 gravestones? image is not clear) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:50, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
