Use a different tag name?

I suggest using cycle_lane=buffered instead of just lane=buffered. This will avoid any collision with the ongoing discussion about lane tagging, i.e. attributes of the individual lanes. Maybe this proposal can be merged into the lane group discussion, as the idea of buffers between lanes is more widely used than just for cycle lanes. --Csmale 22:45, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

I also suggest using a different key than lane, maybe cycleway_lane. Although those buffers could also be tagged with any decent lanes-tagging-scheme, it strongly recommend to add the possibility to tag this without individual lanes-tag. If you would like to tag this with my proposed lanes-tagging-scheme it could(!) look like this:
 cycleway:lanes=no|lane
 dividers:lanes=buffer
Although I'm a strong supporter of lanes-tagging, this would be overkill in many situations. Using its own key, it would look like this:
 cycleway=lane
 cycleway_lane=buffered
I think this is much easier and more readable. Another situation would be if you have more than on cycleway lane and they are mixed within the other lanes, e.g. something like this:
 cycleway:lanes=no|lane|no|lane
 cycleway_lane:lanes=no|buffered|no|default
This gives you a road with four lanes, where one of them is a buffered cycleway lane. You simply can't tag this without an explicit lane-tagging-scheme. --Imagic 08:03, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Here you will find the proposal for lane dividers. Maybe it would be a good idea to use this instead of a new key? I'm thinking of something like this:
 cycleway=lane
 cycleway:divider=buffer

I believe this should be solved in a complex way together with all the other lanes. For immediate improvement I suggest

 cycleway=lane:buffered

But my initially proposed cycleway_lane would also be a new key. As well as the cycleway:divider would be. The latter one would have the advantage, that we would have a single common source of possible "dividers", which could be used in any situation, where different lanes are divided. I mean "in addition to the main key cycleway=lane". The current proposal is about "lane=buffered" which is ambiguous since the lane can be something else (e.g. psv, taxi) but not the cycle lane. Pieren 13:32, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

I like the idea of this proposal! But what's about: cycleway=buffered_lane? (or maybe: cycleway=lane_buffered) So you don't need an extra-tag. -- MasiMaster 23:21, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

If we use cycleway=buffered_lane we break compatibility with all existing applications. If we instead use the existing cycleway=lane and add the information about the buffer somewhere else, we will maintain compatibility and add an extra bit of information. The latter one should be achievable by a common solution, that's why I prefer cycleway:divider=buffer. --Imagic 09:17, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Buffers on left/right/both

It might be useful to also add information on where the buffer is. I believe there are bike lanes which have a buffer on the right, to prevent dooring from parked cars. Adding yet another key for this (buffer=right/left/both) might make this overly complicated, though, and I second the idea to integrate this proposal with the larger lane tagging discussion. --Hobbesvsboyle 15:12, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

This was also my first thought. But on the other hand, in my opinion cycleways whitout a (minimum 1 m) buffer to parking-lane is illegal! So i think it is better for using the buffer between the "road". -- MasiMaster 23:34, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Standards for bike lanes obviously vary from location to location. You can certainly find a great many of bike lanes right next to on-street parking in the wild, and being able to tag them would be good. --Hobbesvsboyle 15:03, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
