How would a mapper distinguish the difference between man_made=mast, man_made=tower+tower:type=communication and man_made=communications_tower. I am very much inclined to If you have to scale on the outside its a mast, if you might be able to scale on the inside it is a tower, and communications_tower is just a duplicate of tower+tower:type=communications --Skippern 23:20, 16 September 2012 (BST)

I would like to distinguish also between man_made=communications_tower and man_made=tower + tower:type=communications for having a difference between real communications towers and others. If you want to render a topographic map, you can show really big towers on lower zoom levels. They are good landmarks for navigation. --Derstefan (talk) 09:26, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
This one does indeed look like an annoying duplicate of man_made=tower+tower:type=communication. Differentiation between the purpose of towers is done with tower:type=*, and if you want to differentiate otherwise, then use height=*, material=*, and/or tag it as an area (should be supported).--Guttorm Flatabø (talk) 10:29, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

bos tower

What is a bos tower? Jidanni (talk) 20:08, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Tower transmitting multiple broadcast signals

How do we tag the situation where signals from many radio and television stations are transmitted from a single tower? It is glaringly inefficient to have to use multiple nodes spaced a very short distance apart for each broadcast signal, when only one tower exists on a particular site. Make standard cell tower antenna templates

On Proposed features/Telecommunications tower we see (each antenna of) cell towers have many standard details (azimuth etc.) and even CellId that could be made into templates for e.g., the iD editor, so the user would be prompted with all the relevant fields so he wouldn't forget any. Concealed towers

Most new cell towers these days, at least where I live, are hidden within fake water towers. Of course there are also fake trees. Anyway do mention e.g., tower:construction=lattice;concealed, and a way to list what we mappers see as "on the ground". Also some mere "bricks" on a wall might be phony "towers" (antennas) too. Jidanni (talk) 00:10, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

OK please mention Key:mimics and concealed vs. mimics. Jidanni (talk) 05:46, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Obsolete mobile_phone and move all to mobile

Hi,

My main contribution at OSM is adding cell towers, but I found a lot of mix use of mobile_phone and mobile.

Is it OK to start a process to abandon all mobile_phone entries? There is no reason to keep duplicate tags.

-- CBRS (talk) 17:03, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

What tag are you referring to which is using a mix of mobile_phone and mobile? GinaroZ (talk) 00:20, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
communication:mobile_phone vs communication:mobile -- CBRS (talk) 05:21, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Well the first one has ~87,000 uses and the second only has ~1,900 uses (with 270 duplicates), so I'm not sure there's a lot of mix between the two. Or do you mean you want to change everything to communication:mobile? GinaroZ (talk) 16:53, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Of course they should be merged into "mobile" (or "mobile_phone" but I don't prefer anything longer), or "cellphone". However, *I think* mobile is enough. -- CBRS (talk) 17:15, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
I'd also like to note that mobile could be used for land mobile (like 2 way radio, DMR, TETRA, P25...) towers. I have no idea now. Maybe cellphone should be used to avoid collision. -- CBRS (talk) 03:51, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

The building next to it

Mention how to tag the building next to it, that houses all the wires, etc. Jidanni (talk) 20:18, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

That’s service building. —CBRS (talk) 05:13, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
