AS my comment to marine mapping says, a rock that is submerged all the time should be tagged with depth=*, a rock that sticks up from the water all the time should be tagged ele=heigth and a rock that is submerged only on high tide should be tagged with tidal=yes --Skippern 17:46, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Right, but i dont think it makes sense to tag rocks as "tag|depth". Are you ok with the feature "natural=rocks" or would "seamark=caution" make more sence? The point of the tag is to tell sailors that there are rocks, and to use caution. --acrosscanadatrails 07:44, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
As an active user of marine charts, I feel that seamark=caution more applies if there is need for a caution note. We need a speciffic tag for skerries and rocks, wether they are fully submerged all the time or not. Reefs can also be considered a dangerous area with a caution note, but should definitely be tagged differently. Doesn't hurt to mark a caution as well. For submerged rocks, the waterdepth is of importance to what boats can pass close safely and who need a better clearance to pass. --Skippern 10:42, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

place=island

I've added, and updated the canvec sample area of Ucluelet, BC with this tag so it should show up better. And obvious that it is an island (even small) I haven't added seamark=caution. For shallow areas, which are shaded polygons, they get rendered differently than open water, to the fact that it looks different "should" be good enough. Once the tag "seamark=caution" becomes it's own wiki page, and others agree. It might be worth adding. (personally, i would like to see 'seamark' listed in JOSM presets.) Or at least having more options to choose from in the water/waterway section.

Both Mapnik and Tilesathome know place=islet for smaller islands. There's no written guide as to where the line is, but the place=island islands are shown quite prominently and already at zoom=10 and zoom=12, while islets only from z=14 and z=13. Alv 06:16, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
