Introduction

Adding some info of the public transport system proposed in SITGAM and Proyecto Nodos.

The goal of this page is to gather information and coordinate efforts to begin properly mapping public transport in Costa Rica. There are currently some users working on mapping on OpenStreetMap the different modes of public transport in Costa Rica. There is already some previous work done, related to INCOFER service, and the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) has a well defined plan to improved the public transport system in Costa Rica.

How to map the public transport in Costa Rica

More info to be added soon.
  • Consider adding the tag [ptcr](https://www.openstreetmap.org/traces/tag/ptcr ) to the traces you upload when mapping public transport. The tags public transport and costa rica are also useful.
  • Use OSMTracker with the button layout for public transport.

Notes:

  • Information on routes, stops and schedules is available on the INCOFER website: http://www.incofer.go.cr, which varies frequently.
  • The app Transportr includes the itineraries of the INCOFER train service. This is possible thanks to the geographic information available in OSM and the schedules on the INCOFER website, which are both used to generate a GTFS with the script osm2gtfs.

Buses

SITGAM proposes the development of several Axis Projects for the Modernization of public bus transportation in the Metropolitan Area of San José, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago, in addition to the commissioning of a fast passenger train (TRP) system in the GAM.

Below is the distribution of buses for the Metropolitan Area of San José and surrounding areas:

Intersectorals

According to the MOPT's website, Intersectorals (aka Interlíneas, in Spanish) are primary routes that communicate peripheral populations of the city. They allow users to move to their destiny without passing throughout the center of San José. Operation hours of this mode of transport is from 5:00am to 7:00pm, monday through sunday. with a fare of ¢350.

High-capacity trunk lines that are fed by secondary or intersectoral routes in the integration nodes.

Bus Route Operators

Nodes

According to PTv2, there are three types of bus stops that can be mapped: bus/train stops, terminals and stations. The SITGAM makes an introduction to what they call nodes for the Great Metropolitan Area (GAM), which will all be stations and, in some cases, terminals. They will include several intermodal stops, like bus and train stops, taxi and bike parking, among other services. This is only a proposal, for the moment, though most of the nodes already exists, so they can be mapped and well prepared to include all features when the transformation in real life occurs.
