Hello! My name is Brian Sperlongano, and I am based in Rhode Island, USA. My mapping interests include boundaries, protected areas, and hiking trails.
I have previously served on the OpenStreetMap US board of directors.
Outside Projects
- I am the creator of StreetFerret, which is based on OpenStreetMap and Strava. As part of this project, I help fix administrative boundaries worldwide, primarily at level 7 and 8.

I founded the OpenStreetMap Americana project, which aims to produce a map in the style of North American maps, with comprehensive highway shield rendering on a vector tile stack.
I have completed the following projects:
- In January 2024, I presented "Vector Tiles & DevOps: Streamlining Contributions at OpenStreetMap Americana" at Mapping USA
- In May 2023, I gave an OSM US "Mappy Hour" presentation titled "Building and Growing an Open Source Community Project"
- In April 2022, I presented "An American Map Style" at State of the Map US in Tucson, AZ
- In April 2021, I gave an OSM US "Mappy Hour" presentation on river mapping titled "A brief paddle through river tagging"
- I developed Chrome and Firefox plugins for human-readable views of wikidata tagging on openstreetmap.org.
- I wrote a guide on Configuring an Overpass Server on Ubuntu
- I developed a shell script for bulk downloading OSM mailing lists on Unix/Linux systems
- I hiked and mapped the entire North South Trail North South Trail, a 77-mile route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Massachusetts state line, over a series of 11 hikes.
- I created a protected area inspector for the United States, based on the PAD-US data set, in collaboration with ke9tv.
- I mapped town, city, and township boundaries in Maine, USA.
- I wrote a MapRoulette guest blog post for the USA GNIS Reservoir Node Challenge
- I removed the service=driveway2 tag and in the process inadvertently started the top Community Forum thread of all time.
- I successfully advocated for converting the Discourse support forum from voting threads to normal threaded discussions.
I am currently working the following projects:
- A collaborative project to modernize river tagging.
- An AJAX replacement for the {{taginfo}} template.
- I am mapping land use and land cover data for Rhode Island, one town at a time. See an example of my work on Prudence Island Prudence Island.
- I am contributing to the United States Public Lands project in order to document public land tagging standards for Rhode Island.

Proposal Development
I am a strong proponent of using the OpenStreetMap proposal process to achieve consensus on tagging schemes. If you are interested in writing a proposal, and would like private help or feedback, I would be happy to assist in helping you get your idea through the proposal process.
