This key is used together with at least the two different sectors of navigation, aviation and indoor navigation, and specifies the type of an installed navigation system.
In case of aviation the key is de facto used in combination with airmark=beacon and specifies the type of aeronautical radio navigation system.
In case of indoor navigation the key is approved to use in combination with indoormark=beacon and specifies the type of beacon technology.
Add beacon:type=* to a node tagged with airmark=beacon. This use isn't based on a proposal but is de facto.
Values
It is recommended to use uppercase letters for the value.

Values
Values could be any technology that is available in a building, like bluetooth, nfc, qr, etc.
In the majority of cases, values in OSM are preferably written in lower case.
