Tagging names in persian

I would propose to quickly change the suggestions about tagging names solely in English. The argument that some renderers (which are those actually?) cannot render persian characters should not result in the data being artificially limited to latin characters. The aim of OSM is not to create a map readable for the part of the world with the latin alphabet, but for everyone. The local name should always come first here. Some feedback from the OSM chat discussing this topic:

PerroVerd: name-tag should be the local official name
RichardF: that's a rendering issue - tag the local name as name, and if someone wants a Latin-only map, they can render one themselves

I am eager to hear your arguments for tagging in English, but renderer bugs aren't valid in my opinion. For example I would tag

"name=München" + "name:en=Munich" + "name:de=München" + "name:fa=مونیخ"

and the persian equivalent would be

"name=تهران" + "name:en=Tehran" + "name:de=Teheran" + "name:fa=تهران‎ " --Claudius Henrichs 10:29, 15 May 2008 (UTC)‎

• I would like to be able to easily find Sinchuan on the map when I hear about an earthquake. Besides, I do not want the map to be populated with wrong characters produced by non-standard non-unicode keyboards. • I would understand the problem if you would have asked me 5 years ago, but today dealing with unicode characters is standard for applications including renderers. Could you tell me a renderer which has problems with the arabic script? Regarding your very valid Sichuan-example: OSM-Namesearch already parses all "name:<ISO-code>" variants meaning you can already find that place when searching for "Sinchuan". You want the local chinese people to have english names on their map just so that some people from far away can read it better? A good example is "Bagdad" which is printed on the map in arabic script but can be found easily via OSM namesearch. The use case for the openstreetmap main map in my opinion is the usage by locals and therefore I would like to see the name in "my language", e.g. "Nürnberg" and not "Nuremburg". The solution to the problem you are describing (being able to read the map in places abroad) is not to write all names in english but simply to create an alternate rendering only using english names (where available) and of course as a short term solution to fix the rendering issues in asia (excluding Iran, where it already works)... And by the way: Zoom levels 1-5 already show english names only. Is that what you are referring to with "world view"? --Grille Chompa 11:43, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I suggest branch_code for banks too. For example a bank can have the following tags:

name:fa=بانک ملت

Gas Station

We have only the below types of gas in Iran:

• Petrol
• Super Petrol
• LPG (maybe)
• CNG
• Diesel

So I suggest the below tagging for amenity=fuel:

• fuel:petrol=yes/no
• fuel:super_petrol=yes/no
• fuel:lpg=yes/no
• fuel:cng=yes/no
• fuel:diesel=yes/no

Thanks for sharing your proposal. I think we should be compatible with the international system described at Fuel and Key:fuel. So I would suggest:

Petrol	fuel:octane_91=yes
Super Petrol	fuel:octane_95=yes
LPG	fuel:lpg=yes
CNG	fuel:cng=yes
Diesel	fuel:diesel=yes

But as far as I know about Normal Petrol (look here) it has lower octane than 91. What should we do? --Messi (talk) 09:45, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

We just need to know the octane number of petrol being sold in Iran. It should be written next to the petrol pump. From the wikipedia article it sounds like it should be fuel:octane_80=yes. --Claudius (talk) 10:02, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
