A life_cycle relation can be used to map a feature that is not yet or no longer in use. The tags describing the feature are added to a relation, together with a tag describing the life cycle status and optionally information about begin and end dates of life cycle state.

Rationale

Features under construction and disused objects in various states of decay are common and usually mapworthy – while they cannot be used for their intended/original purpose, they still serve as visible landmarks or may be of historical interest. It is common for maps to include this type of information.

Values for life_cycle

The following values are possible for the life_cycle key. There are other suggestions, such as abandoned, preserved and planned – these can be easily added later, but are not part of this proposal, which is likely controversial enough itself.

Key Value Element Comment Rendering Photo
life_cycle construction Relation A feature under construction. some semi-transparent, dashed or dotted version of the normal rendering at the renderer’s discretion.
life_cycle disused Relation A feature which is no longer used. some semi-transparent, dashed or dotted version of the normal rendering at the renderer’s discretion.

Example

motorway (with 3 lanes) under construction since January 2007, scheduled for completion 2011:

Keys:

  • type=life_cycle
  • life_cycle=construction
  • life_cycle:start_date=2007-01
  • life_cycle:end_date=2011
  • highway=motorway
  • lanes=3
