Proposal

On moorings (and perhaps in car parks or other places where you park other vehicles) the length of stay is sometimes restricted. This tag encodes that in the same manner as maxwidth, maxlength etc.

Tagging

maxstay=N minutes/hours/days/weeks

Rendering

Text annotation alongside mooring/parking

Discussion

  • I just added two parking lots at the local mall that needed this tag, so I went ahead and just used it. Because I couldn't find anything in the wiki about a standardised way of putting time values in tags, (there is one for dates) I used: maxstay=90 minutes --Cartinus 20:50, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
  • While this would be a very useful tag, the danger of using this on canals is that the British Waterways(BW) "fairy" tends to change 14 day moorings to 48 hour moorings without warning or subsequent notification. OTOH OSM has the potential to keep this reasonably up to date. On BW canals, the default would be 14 days --Big John 22:25, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Sometimes the maximum stay period changes depending on the time of day and weekday, should we have a common system for describing them? For example you might be limited to 60 minutes between 08-20 on Mon-Fri, unlimited stay on weekends and nights. --Tsok 08:41, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
  • I don't want the complexities of parking restrictions to bog this proposal down. The waterways situation is simple (modulo Big John's comments above) and we need a tag for that. If someone else wants to propose something more complex for variable parking restrictions, they can do that. :-) Gerv 09:33, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
    • i don't think they will bog it down. all we need is something like:
period_1_start=0800
period_1_end=2100
period_1_days=mon-fri
period_1_maxstay=60_minutes
period_2_start=2100
period_2_end=2300
period_2_days=mon-fri
period_2_maxstay=120_minutes
period_3_start=0000
period_3_end=2400
period_3_days=sat-sun
period_3_maxstay=8_hours

etc.

or for simple rules maxstay=8_hours

still only four fields maximum. you don't have to inlcude all of them. if all you want is a simple 'this is how long you can stay, whatever the time of day or week', that can be accomodated, without losing the fine-grained approach for other situations, like roadside parking Myfanwy 10:23, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

  • That seems more complicated to me :-) And I think there are several bugs in that design. And as I said, I don't want to get into designing something more complicated properly, when the simple tag solves 90% of the problems. So I plan to put this to a vote; if people think we shouldn't have a simple tag without figuring out the complicated version, I guess they'll have to vote No. :-| Gerv 18:37, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
