Proposal

To enable tagging of anywhere that sells food - restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, etc. - to say whether they offer vegetarian and vegan options, and if they only sell vegetarian and/or vegan options.

Rationale

We currently have cuisine=* including the value cuisine=vegetarian, but this isn't very satisfactory. It would be better if we could tag, for example:

We also have, buried in the original proposal for marketplaces, tags for meat=yes and fish=yes, which serve a similar purpose.

You can see this tagging in use in this OpenEcoMaps view.

Tagging

diet:<DIET_TYPE>=<OFFER>
DIET_TYPE OFFER
pescetarian
(no land-dwelling meat, but allows fish)
vegetarian
(synonym for ovo-lacto-vegetarian, no fish or meat)
lacto_vegetarian
(no fish, meat or eggs)
ovo_vegetarian
(no fish, meat or dairy)
vegan
(no fish, meat, dairy, eggs or any other animal products)
fruitarian
(only fruit, nuts and seeds)
raw
(uncooked and unprocessed only)
gluten_free
(no gluten in food)
yes
full options available (i.e. several proper meals not just side salads in restaurants or a baked potato in a pub, and specific alternatives in shops such as gluten-free cereals or vegetarian mince)
no
no options for this diet available
only
only provides this dietary option (N.B. it may be helpful to tag diet:vegetarian=only and diet:vegan=yes)

Note on "full options": for the avoidance of doubt, a pub or cafe that has on its menu one or two options that are vegetarian (such as a salad and a baked potato) but that makes no explicit effort to provide a good range of vegetarian options should not be tagged as vegetarian=yes. Greengrocers that sell lettuce and tomatoes also need to make an effort to offer, for example, a range of explicit vegetarian alternatives to meat or a good selection of fish without animal by-products to deserver vegetarian=yes or pescetarian=yes.
