Proposal

The tag historic=heritage has been proposed for anything that is recognized as being of historic value by an authority ^[1]. But it was said that the historic tag should be used with other values on the same object (historic=building, historic=district, historic=site). It was said also (but I don't remember where) that heritage could not be historic, but natural sites.

An other tag has been proposed for Unesco World Heritage : historic=unesco world heritage ^[2]. The same remark can be done, about this tag : the use of the historic tag for mention to Unesco classification, the historic character. We can add that the historic=unesco_wold_classification is too narrow, other inscription sould have place in OSM.

So, a new way of tagging heritage is necessary. Why not heritage with a tagging system ?

apply to

heritage=* should be used on geographical, permanent objects : sites, areas, buildings, parts of buildings, fixed sulpture, fresco. They can't be used on a non static object (painting...)

Main tag

The main tag heritage can have values from 1 to 10 according to the organisations recording the object. If the object is recorded by several organisations, the lowest value is used (like for admin_level=*).

Secondary tags

heritage:operator=*		see below. Multiple values can be concatenated using the ; separator, from the highest to the lowest (internationnal, nationnal, regionnal...)

No specific rendering can be set for the whole use of this tag. But an icon from the organisation (see above), as a label, can be used with some renderers .
