Railway marshalling yards are an area used for storage/organisation of rail wagons, coaches, etc. Passengers do not normally pass through them. They are generally an area containing lots (sometimes 30+) of tracks very close together and parallel, occasionally with buildings and supplies for the maintenance of rail vehicles and tracks, e.g. repair sheds, equipment shed, cleaning sheds, sleepers, track lengths, signal components, etc.
