ZIP codes

Has anyone considered the utility or lack thereof for creating a set of nested relations which would model the United States ZIP code system? For instance, the first digit of the ZIP code relates to a group of states (see Wikipedia:ZIP code#Primary State Prefixes). A large set of nested relations could, in principle, model the entire ZIP system down through the ZIP+4 codes. --Ceyockey 01:56, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Some thoughts on this

thinking out loud

At the top level would be the international boundary for the United States. The second level would be the first ZIP digit, with each of the ZIP digits containing as members the boundaries for one or more states. There is a problem, however, in going deeper than this, as the 2nd and 3rd digits relate to a 'sectional center facility' and it is unclear whether the geographical location of these is in a copyright domain compatible with OSM use. --Ceyockey 02:02, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
